With so many formulations, sizes, colors, textures and prices… eyeliner can get a little confusing! Different formulas and applicators are good for achieving different looks, so it’s important to use the right one!
This guide will help you understand a little bit more about the different types of eyeliners out there, what to look for and how to use it properly! While there are no rules in makeup, there certainly are guidelines and hopefully these will help you out!

Eyeliner 101: Choosing An Eyeliner Formula
With so many formulations, sizes, colors, textures and prices... eyeliner can get a little confusing! Different formulas and applicators are good for achieving different looks, so it's important to use the right one!
This guide will help you understand a little bit more about the different types of eyeliners out there, what to look for and how to use it properly! While there are no rules in makeup, there certainly are guidelines and hopefully these will help you out!

Pencil Eyeliners
Pencil eyeliners are the easiest to use. You can hold them like a pencil so they feel natural in your hands, and you can get really close to the lashline with little effort. These eyeliners are great for creating a soft, subtle line (especially if you use a dense brush or Q-tip to soften the line).
These eyeliners are not the best for creating cat-eye shapes, as it can be difficult to be precise with the soft tips. They work great for lining the waterline (as long as it's a waterproof pencil). These eyeliners are also essential for creating a smoky eye- after your eyeshadow is done, line your eyes all the way around and soften the line for a smoky effect). Pencils usually come in a wide variety of colors and textures (the creamier the pencil, the easier it is to apply).
Editor's Picks:
1) Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Eye Pencil
2) Too Faced Perfect Eyes Waterproof Eyeliner
3) Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil

Liquid Eyeliners
Liquid eyeliners usually come with a long handle that dips into a small pot of thick liquid, and is applied to the eye with a small brush. This formula is the best for creating that thick, dramatic cat-eye look, however it is also one of the most difficult to use.
Many find traditional liquid eyeliner to be tricky, but it does get easier with practice. Those with curly eyelashes will find it more difficult to apply close to the lashline, and since the brush tip is usually very small, it's not always easy to create a smooth line. This eyeliner formula is not good for creating a soft or smoky look, because it doesn't blend out softly.
A great tip is to apply eyeliner with pencil first, then trace the line with a liquid. This formula is also great for creating artistic designs and graphic looks, but make sure to let it dry completely!
Editor's Picks:
1) Dior Style Liner
2) Milani Infinite Liquid Eyeliner
3) Benefit Magic Ink

Felt-Tip Eyeliners
Felt-Tip eyeliners are relatively new (when comparing to other formulas). The product works just like a felt-tip pen, with the product inside the tube and saturates the felt-tip. The felt tip is usually quite solid, and doesn't flex very much, making it a little more easy to create a smooth line.
These eyeliners are great for creating subtle liquid lines and cat-eye looks. Depending on how precise the tip is though, you may not be able to create a super sharp edge or point (which some may desire for a cat-eye flick). It's also important to find a good formula, as some of these eyeliners can apply very sheer color, which causes you to lose definition. These eyeliners are not the best for soft looks as they usually set and dry very fast (unless you choose to apply eyeshadow on top to create a soft look).
Editor's Picks:
1) Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner
2) Maybelline Master Precise Liner
3) Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner

Liquid Felt-Tip Eyeliners
As the name suggests, these eyeliners are a hybrid between a traditional liquid eyeliner and a felt-tip eyeliner. They have a stiff, felt-tip applicator however the product is not housed in the handle, it is dipped into a small pot of eyeliner. The product still saturates the felt-tip, so any excess can be wiped off while still allowing for good application.
These are harder to use than felt-tip eyeliners, but easier to use than liquid eyeliners. They create the same looks though, from a subtle line to a big, dramatic cat-eye. They don't dry as fast as felt-tip liners so you have to be careful about smudging. They also have the same problem as some felt-tip liners, if they are not precise enough with the applicator tip, it can be difficult to create a sharp edge or point.
Editor's Picks:
1) Make Up For Ever Aqua Liner
2) Lancôme Artliner
3) L'Oreal Telescopic Precision Liquid Eyeliner

Gel Eyeliners
Gel eyeliners allow the ease of using a pencil (because they are applied with a brush of your choice), while creating the effect of liquid eyeliner. Cake eyeliners are very similar as well. Gel eyeliners usually have fantastic staying power when they set, but they also can be softened (with a brush or Q-tip) to create a smoky look, like you can with pencil eyeliners.
This formula is great for creating a wide variety of effects, from subtle lines, to smoky looks to cat-eye wings. It really depends on what brush you use- popular ones include small, sharp angled brushes or precise, pointed brushes.
These eyeliners can apply a little more thick, so its best to work with little strokes at a time.
Editor's Picks:
1) MAC Fluidline
2) Maybelline Eye Studio Eyeliner
3) Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner
