10 Ways to Boost Your Beauty Sleep

Beauty Sleep Products

If there’s one thing we all can agree on, it’s that beauty sleep is actually a thing. As someone with a sleep-wake disorder, I have learned the importance of maintaining a proper sleep cycle and the impact of what happens when you don’t. While everyone has a late night here or there, chronic sleep deprivation can wreak havoc on your brain and your body.

Whether you’re dealing with stress, fighting jetlag or just have bad sleep habits (like staring at your phone while laying in bed—#guilty), eventually you’re going to see results when you look in the mirror. We all slip up occassionally, but if you want to look and feel your best, make sure you’re catching enough of those Zzz’s each night.

In honour of World Sleep Day, I wanted to share my most practical sleep solutions for getting a good night’s rest—or at the very least, looking like it.

  • SLIP Silk Sleep Mask
  • SLIP Silk Sleep Mask, $60

If you thought all sleep masks were created equal (as I once did), think again. This luxurious silk sleep mask is like the by far the most comfortable I’ve ever tried (it’s like a soft, plushy pillow for your eyes) but it also has amazing anti-aging benefits too. Cotton versions can draw out moisture and satin ones don’t allow skin to breathe.

I found my eyes to be less dry and red when I wake up and the ruched elastic doesn’t leave any kinks in my hair, so it really does help with the whole ‘beauty sleep’ thing. The extra-large size covers my eyes perfectly to block out light, which signals to the brain that it’s time to sleep—essential for anyone like myself, living downtown in a big city with terrible blinds.

It also harnesses the power of aromatherapy with a blend of encapsulated essential oils, including French Lavender, Sandalwood and Patchouli. The motion-activated essentails oils gradually release throughout the night as you toss and turn, helping soothe your senses and promote a deep, restful sleep.

  • Casper Pillow
  • Casper Pillow, $85

You’ve probably heard of Casper, the massively-popular mattress-in-a-box startup reinventing the way people sleep. But you may not know they also make an entire range of products, including sheets, a duvet and even—yep, not kidding—a dog bed. If splurging on the entire bed is out of the question, you can still feel like you’re sleeping on a cloud at a much smaller price point with one amazing (and understated) product: the pillow.

It’s has a unique pillow-within-a-pillow design that satisfies side, back and stomach sleepers alike. The inner portion provides support while the outer pillow has a soft, fluffy feel. Basically, it’s like the Rolls-Royce of pillows, and when covered with their breatheable, Supima cotton pillowcase, it’s a total dream come true.

  • Gravid Weighted Blanket
  • Gravid Weighted Blanket, $259 (20lb)

If you haven’t heard of the benefits of using a weighted blanket, you’re about to. A recent Kickstarter to fund the production of weighted blankets raised over $4.7M in support—one of the most-funded projects in the website’s history. Since then, more brands have released their versions and I have a feeling we’re about to see many more very soon. Engineered to weigh 10% of your body weight, they harness the power of deep touch stimulation—basically like a gentle, full-body hug—to naturally reduce stress and anxiety while promoting deep, restful sleep.

Scientific studies have shown weighted blankets reduce cortisol levels and increase serotinin products, which is why they’ve been used in the medical community for many years to treat anxiety, PTSD, insomnia and more. They aren’t cheap, but it has been one of the best investments I’ve made for my own well-being.

  • Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter
  • Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter, $50

This glow-boosting complexion enhancer may not help you get your beauty sleep, but it definitely will make you look like you did. It can be worn on bare skin alone or applied before makeup, mixed into your foundation or on top of makeup (or if you’re obsessed like me, all of the above). Not only does it brighten and illuminate skin, but it also blurs imperfections like fine lines and pores with finely-milled powders and airbrushing polymers.

Essentially, it’s like a real-life version of your favourite skin-smoothing Instagram filter… but I’m warning you—it’s just as addictive and you won’t ever want to be without it again.

  • Urban Decay All-Nighter Waterproof Full Coverage Concealer
  • Urban Decay All-Nighter Waterproof Full Coverage Concealer, $35

Sometimes, you just need to pull out the big guns to take care of those dark circles and this concealer is my new go-to weapon. It offers full coverage that lasts—no creasing, caking or fading throughout the day—so I can skip the setting powder, which usually makes my skin look dry and enhances lines I didn’t even know I had.

It’s pretty intense stuff, so I recommend working on one area at a time and layering as needed, because once it sets, it stays. If you prefer a stick formula, check out bareMinerals’ new concealer which I’ve been loving for covering blemishes and imperfections on the rest of my face.

  • Headspace App
  • Headspace App, Free

Meditation during the day is a great way to reduce stress and anxiety through mindfullness, but it also helps to promote better sleep at night. Prolonged stress can throw your body’s natural fight-or-flight response off balance and spike your cortisol levels (the stress hormone) late into the night, making it difficult to relax or fall asleep.

This is the best app I’ve found for de-stressing during the day and winding down at night, partially because of the effective techniques taught but also because of the narrator’s soothing voice (I once listened to a lecture by a man who sounded very similar and I had a very difficult time staying awake). The app is free to download and includes several themed sessions (including one for sleep) or you can subscribe for full access to the entire library.
