If I was only allowed to use one product and one product only for the rest of my life, it would be concealer. Hide my dark circles, banish my blemishes, even out my redness… it’s truly a life-saver. This season, Benefit Cosmetics decided to give their concealer range a little makeover and add one more formula to the family as well.
Benefit’s former concealers all had different, cheeky names (in typical Benefit fashion) but they have now all been merged into one family under the Boi-ing name. Now, each eraser-inspired concealer simply specifies what kind of coverage solution they offer, making it much easier to figure out which one is best for you.
Each formula has the same pricetag of $20 and come in three shades—01, 02 and 03. I have to throw in a little passive-agressive eyeroll at the fact the shade range is so small and definitely doesn’t cater to a full range of skintones, so I’m hoping Benefit decides to expand the shade range in the future.
Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, let’s take a look at the different formulas…
Boi-ing Industrial Strength Concealer
Boi-ing Industrial Strength Concealer is the OG formula that so many know and love. It’s a thick, creamy concealer with the highlest level of pigmentation. It comes in a pot with a see-through, screw-top lid. If you’re able to find a perfect shade match, then you’ll probably really like this one.
It covers blemishes, redness and discolouration really well and dries to a matte finish. It does a pretty good job of covering dark circles as well, but some might find it a bit heavy for the undereye area and there’s a better formula for that anyways—keep reading below.
Boi-ing Brightening Concealer
Boi-ing Brightening Concealer, formerly known as Erase Paste, is an ultra creamy formula with a more pink/peach tint to help neutralize dark undereye circles. It also has pretty intense coverage, but it’s the radiant finish and rosy tone that really makes a huge difference under the eyes.
It’s probably my favourite formula out of them all and I’m not entirely sure if they changed it from the Erase Paste days, but this one seems a bit firmer and less… goopy… than the original.
The downside? It does crease quite easily, so setting it with powder is a must. If creasing is one of your main concerns, then you’ll want to pass on this one and opt for something more long-wearing.
Boi-ing Hydrating Concealer
Boi-ing Hydrating Concealer, formerly known as Fake-Up, comes in a stick form with a hydrating balm outer layer and pigmented concealer core. When you sweep it on and blend the product in, the result is a sheer, hydrating finish. It’s infused with vitamin E and apple seed extract to nourish skin.
I wasn’t ever a fan of Fake-Up because I just didn’t find the coverage was sufficient to make a difference for me. Yes, it’s super hydrating, so if you only need a little extra help with the undereye area then you’ll probably love how natural this one looks. I really wish Benefit would have given this formula the same pink/peach undertones that the Brightening concealer has because I find they are quite yellow for the undereye area.
One tip that I really do love is using this one to efresh my concealer by patting it on top throughout the day or after a flight—it re-hydrates area with an added touch of coverage.
Boi-ing Airbrush Concealer
Boi-ing Airbrush Concealer is the new addition to the family. It’s not as pigmented as the Industrial or Brightening formulas, but it is a little more long-wearing. It feels very lightweight and has a soft-focus finish, almost like you would get with a blurring primer.
I see this one as more of an everyday quick fix—you’ll have to pull out the big guns if you’re pulling all-nighters, stressing out over looming deadlines and choose wine over water too often. It’s probably the most well-rounded formula and would be sufficient for the lucky individuals who only need a bit of help.
Overall thoughts on the collection? It’s a cute, quirky and probably perfect for teenagers, baby-faced French models and that one friend we all have who somehow is always hydrated, rested and stress-free. For the rest of us, it might not be enough to cover the signs of the night before—or life in general.
