There is seriously a BB Revolution happening right now. Pretty much every brand has (or will) released a BB Cream, and as a beauty blogger, of course I feel the need to try them all and find the best one!
BB Creams (Blemish Balm or Beauty Balm) are basically glorified tinted moisturizers- an all-in-one complexion perfecting product that hydrates, protects, treats, brightens and conceals. It’s really a fantastic product (when done right), and has been very popular in Asia for many years now. As the formulas pop up in North America, I’ve found that many of them are feeling (and looking) just like a tinted moisturizer. An authentic BB Cream should be much more thick and pigmented than a moisturizer (hence the ‘balm’ in the name)- so I make sure to look for that.
Leave it up to Bobbi Brown to make a complexion-perfecting product…well… perfect.
Bobbi Brown has recently launched her own Bobbi Brown BB Cream SPF 35 ($42 USD) and I must say that I’m absolutely in love with the formula. It is the most authentic-feeling BB Cream I’ve tried, it offers the best coverage and it looks spectacular on the skin. I’ve been wearing it everyday since I got it, and it looks great on its own, or topped off with a bit of powder foundation for a completely flawless finish.
The first time I used it, I used way too much product (I guess I was used to using a lot more because many other ones are so sheer)… you really only need a tiny amount, a pea-sized dollop will be great for your whole face. I like to apply it with my fingers if I’m in a rush, or I’ll use a synthetic foundation brush. It blends beautifully into the skin and looks totally undetectable!
Many BB Creams come in only 1-2 shades, but the Bobbi Brown BB Cream is available in five (however they are still on the light-to-medium end of the shade spectrum); Extra Light, Light, Fair, Medium and Medium to Dark. I find the names to be a bit confusing, because I usually associate “Fair” with the lightest possible shade, but in fact that is the middle shade, and it’s what I use. For reference, I usually use Bobbi Brown foundations in shade “Beige” or “Natural”.
The formula does contain an SPF 35, which I love (part of the BB-philosophy is to combine skincare with makeup), but it does have quite a strong sunscreen scent that lingers for a while after I’ve applied it. I get used to it after about an hour or so- but it’s probably the only thing I can think of that isn’t amazing about this BB Cream.
My skin is evened out (almost as much as a foundation would), but I still need a dab of concealer under the eyes and on blemishes for a flawless look. It feels comfortable and wears well throughout the day! It’s obviously a lot more pricey than the other drugstore BB Creams on the market, but the quality, coverage and authentic feel of this BB Cream makes it totally worth it in my opinion!
Summary
- Price: $42 USD
- Availability: Bobbi Brown
- Selection: See all five shades here
- Overall: I’m extremely pleased with this BB Cream. It’s definitely the most authentic BB Cream I’ve come across that has launched in North America. It’s thick (balm-like), well pigmented (almost as much as foundation) and blends beautifully into the skin. It feels comfortable, however there is quite a strong sunscreen scent from the SPF 35.
