As someone with super flat, straight hair, I’ve tried just about every volumizing mousse, spray, cream and powder out there. Some I like, most I don’t—is it so much to ask for all that lift, body and texture to last more than an hour and to still feel touchable? Apparently not anymore, thanks to Cake Beauty The Hair Raiser ($19), a “mighty volumizing powder” unlike any other out there.
Cake Beauty has become well known for their iconic dry shampoo (it has been one of my favourites for years) and I also really love their salt-free beach wave spray, so it’s pretty safe to say they know what they are doing when it comes to hair. I’ll try anything that has the word “volumizing” on the label, so I was pretty excited to try this new body-boosting powder.
First of all, the packaging is… interesting. It has a pump-top dispenser, but with a long, “precision gun applicator” arm that allows you to really get into the roots or shoot deep into the lengths of your hair. It takes a bit of getting used to, but the real magic is in the formula itself.
The powder has a unique dry-to-wet-to-dry texture which I have never felt anything like before. It puffs out like a dry powder, then feels a bit wet as you rub it in (you can feel this if you put some in your hand, but on the hair it just feels like it’s building texture). After a few seconds, it feels dry again and magically, nearly residue-free.
The rough-structured particles—powered by silica and biotin—increase friction between hair fibres to build sky-high volume and texture. It smells just as delicious as you’d expect from Cake Beauty and it also can be used to give a little extra grip to hair when creating updos, braids and other textured styles.
The brand claims the volumizing effect lasts 18+ hours, however I can’t say I’ve experienced that amount of longevity. It does reactivate a bit if you scrutch and massage, but I’ve just been keeping it with me in my purse for touch-ups since it is quite small and portable. It also has a slight oil-absorbing effect, similar to a dry shampoo, so you can banish greasy roots and build amazing volume with just a puff or two.
I love the fact it can be used at the roots and throughout the lengths while still being flexible enough to layer or brush out. Most volumizing powders I’ve tried require total commitment—once they are in, there’s no turning back. This one is much more forgiving, yet still super effective, earning it my kiss of approval and a permanent spot on my vanity.
Here’s a look at my before and after—curling my hair gives me some added body, but it quickly falls flat (especially at the top). After, my hair has a boost of volume and texture yet it still looks soft, touchable and airy. Love it!
