There’s only one brand that could create a makeup collection that would make me feel like dipping my toes in the South Pacific from my private villa in Bora Bora or sipping rosé from a private yacht in St. Tropez (a girl can dream, right?) and that brand, of course, is Chanel.
Those are also the exact vibes I get from the new 2017 Cruise Collection: Les Indispensables de L’Été.
Radiant, sunkissed skin. Sun-drenched bronzes and corals accented with a pop of colour. Effortless beauty, relaxed vibes and total glamour—that’s what this summery colour collection is all about. It’s also Lucia Pica’s first Cruise Collection for the brand. She wanted to go for “deconstructed glamour” and only include the absolute essentials needed for creating a naturally-beautiful, summer look (I think she nailed it).
The collection only features one complexion product: Les Beiges Healthy Glow Luminous Colour. Limited-edition Les Beiges powders typically pop up each Spring/Summer from Chanel, both in face powder and blush/bronzer forms. This year, it’s a bit of a hybrid between the two. Encased in Chanel’s signature beige-and-black compact, each powder includes a super soft brush applicator which I actually find applies the product really nicely (not like some compact brushes that are too stiff and dense).
The powder comes in five different shades (Light, Medium Light, Medium, Medium Deep and Deep), each designed to create a soft veil of radiance—thanks to the ultra-fine gold particles—along with a hint of bronze colour. I find them to be somewhere in-between an all-over face powder and a bronzer, so you can really use them however you wish.
I have the shades Medium Light and Medium Deep and I actually like using both of them. I’ll apply a sheer dusting of Medium Light all over and concentrate Medium Deep on my cheeks, forehead and bridge of my nose to intensify that sunkissed effect.
The shades are quite light (based on their respective names), so even the fairest of skintones will be able to pull off these glow-boosting powders. The lighter shades also have more of a pink-ish undertone so they look flattering on the skin instead of dirty, as some bronzers can. If you’re a bronzer fanatic, you may want to go up a shade if you’re looking for a bit more intensity.
For lips, the collection offers a range of earthy neutrals and soft pops of colour in two different formulas. The two shades of Rouge Coco Shine Lipstick (my favourite Chanel lipstick formula!) include Golden Sun (sunny peach) and Golden Sand (warm nude). The shades are quite sheer both very wearable with a high-shine finish.
There are also three shades of Rouge Coco Stylo, including Sépia (chocolate bronze), Panorama (soft beige) and Esquisse (coral pink).
These pencil-like lipsticks launched last year and have quickly become a favourite formula for many. They have amazing colour payoff with a high-shine finish (they almost look like a gloss on the lips). They are similar in texture to Rouge Coco Shine, but are much more pigmented and have a bit more lasting power.
Chanel is keeping it simple when it comes to eye makeup this summer—just eyeliner and mascara (waterproof, of course). The collection features two shades of Stylo Yeux Waterproof in Horizon (inky green) and Terra Rossa (aubergine brown).
These colours are designed to define the eyes and complement the bronzy tones of the face. They are unexpected but flattering and add a unique twist to the traditional summer colour palette.
The collection also includes two shades of Inimitable Waterproof Mascara, including Brun Profond (warm brown) and Vert Profond (deep green).
The long-wear formula won’t budge, no matter how hot and humid it gets outside, and the tinted hues subtly enhance the eye colour without using a ton of product.
Last, but certainly not least, the collection includes four Le Vernis Longue Tenue nail polishes in an array of flashy colours. No matter how soft and subdued your makeup look is, it’s always fun to add a pop of colour to your tips and toes in the summer.
The shades include Coquillage (milky orange), Coralium (soft coral), Sea Whip (light pink) and Sargasso (deep grey with a very subtle blue-green shimmer).
I love the idea of contrasting colours on fingernails and toes, so I was happy to see a statement colour like Sargasso in the collection (which I think pairs beautifully on hands with Coralium on the toes).
Chanel Les Indispensables de L’Été 2017 Cruise Collection is available now at Chanel counters and online at nordstrom.com. The eyeliners, mascaras and lipsticks (except “Esquisse”) are limited-edition while the rest of the shades join the permanent collection.shop this collection
