Cover FX and I go way back… back about 8 years to when I relied on their Powder FX to hide my acne scars while keeping my oily skin in check.  I had a bad experience with the Cover FX Total Coverage Cream Foundation at one point, having it applied by a sales associate at Shopper’s Drug Mart who didn’t apply it properly (resulting in a very heavy, cake-like mask that totally turned me off of it for years).  It wasn’t until fairly recently I learned more about the product, how to apply it… and I must say it truly is a wonderful product… if you know how to use it.

The Product

Cover FX is a Canadian-based cosmetic company specializing in perfecting complexions. They truly are the “foundation authority” because of their many formulas, extensive shades, various undertones and total solutions for a wide variety of skin concerns.  The Cover FX Total Coverage Cream Foundation, shown here in shade M30 (light-to-medium golden undertone), is their spearhead product, allowing for sheer to full coverage, to be used as a foundation or concealer and covers a multitude of sins.  And really, it does… but it takes some practice.  If you slather this product on with a regular foundation brush as you would a liquid, you’re not going to be happy with your new mask.

I’m not really a huge fan of wearing it as a foundation because I much prefer sheer to medium coverage foundations, and this one takes quite a bit of work to sheer it down.  I dampen a sponge, and spray my skin with water, and that helps to really spread it out evenly and work it into the skin (which is what I did here).  Afterwards, I take a small concealer brush to build up areas which need more coverage straight from the compact.  The texture of the product is basically a thick, cream concealer (think MAC Studio Finish).  One thing I really enjoy about this compact is that you can literally perfect your entire complexion with just one product, whether you’re having a good skin day or a bad skin day, making it great for travel!

The product is oil-free, fragrance-free and safe for sensitive skin.  It’s also suitable for all skin types, and you can set it with powder if you wish, but you don’t have to… it has great staying power all on its own with a dewy finish (but I like to powder my T-zone anyways).  It’s really an amazing product, but like I said, it can go very wrong. So if you don’t think it works for you or it looks/feels too heavy, check out their how-to videos and tutorials to see how to apply it.  It is an ‘intense’ foundation and works incredibly well for professional use too.

Summary

  • Price: $42 USD / $39 CAD for 0.4oz / 12g
  • Availability: Sephora and other Cover FX retailers
  • Overall: This is a very intense product, and it can be truly amazing and versatile if you know how to use it. I love the huge shade and undertone range- everyone can find their perfect shade.  It can be worn sheer to full (but it does take a good amount of work to really apply it properly), but I prefer to use it as a concealer. Great for travel and professional use.
