It’s been about three years since the world was first introduced to Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black and Nirvana White, and while the debut fragrances from Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s lifestyle brand had us swooning then, they just upped their fragrance game even further.
Now the brand has given us two new distinct and almost boutique fragrances, Nirvana Rose and Nirvana Bourbon. They have the same shape and design as the original two, however these ones feature translucent burgundy and honey brown bottles along with the luxe, gold detailing.
For many, rose is a love-it-or-hate-it note, but often those that fall into the latter camp can be swayed if the rose note errs more on the not-too-floral side of the spectrum. Like fragrance houses Byredo, Diptyque and even Chloé before them, Nirvana Rose approaches the note from less of a happy blooming flower (that can often feel stuffy and powdery, reminding far too many people of their grandmother), and more from a biting and edgy earthy scent. Paired with notes of dark rose, geranium, rose de mai and vetiver, this new rendition is smoky with a hint of decay, like roses just starting to turn.
Nirvana Bourbon takes a sweet smokey approach to fragrance that has a laid-back, almost-Southern feel without losing its cool factor. While a note like vanilla bourbon feels somewhat commonplace for an oriental scent, the balance of oakwood and tuberose give it an unexpected feel and a warm finish without being too gourmand.
While both new scents play homage to the original Nirvana scent portfolio with unexpected note pairings, they do so without copying or building on them the way many other fragrances do.
Interestingly, Nirvana Bourban breathes as the more feminine fragrance of the two, though they could easily be layered and played with to create your own version of nirvana.
Elizabeth and James Nirvana Rose and Nirvana Bourbon are available in two bottle sizes ($65 for 1oz and $85 for 1.7oz) and rollerballs ($25 for 0.34oz) in Sephora stores and online at sephora.com.
