Fall 2011 Look Book: Spider Lashes

Published On September 12, 2011 | Trendsetter

I must say I was completely shocked when I started reading different magazines, all saying that clumpy, spider lashes were a hot trend for Fall.  Honestly, I thought this is what we wanted to avoid?  But… as a good blogger, I wanted to report on the trend so I included the look in our latest photoshoot, and I’m actually SO in love with how it turned out!  I think the trick to this look is to keep the face very simple and clean, skip the eyeshadow and go for a light blush and lip.  The lashes will speak for themselves and really make your eyes pop, like a  modern version a la Twiggy.

How To Get The Look

On our model Kim, I used Benefit They’re Real mascara, and did about 4-5 coats, letting each coat dry completely in between.  Then I used the tip of the wand to really coat the tips of the lashes.  If your mascara doesn’t clump easily, try taking a pair of tweezers and actually clumping your lashes together, then letting them dry in that form.

Thoughts about this trend? Love it or leave it?

I like the way it turned out, but I don’t think I could ever wear it out in public. I mean, I work at Express which is a modern brand, but if I came in wearing that mascara I’m pretty sure my boss would give me a funny look.

Trends are always hard to start if you work in a conservative place…but once it gets going, if it really catches on….then maybe it won’t be so hard!

Leave it. The models can have this one. Lol

I actually LOVE this trend! I tried it myself a few days after we took the photos. I toned it down a bit by only applying 3 coats of mascara and to my surprise it was quite wearable. I absolutely agree with Jessica that keeping it simple and not wearing any eyeshadow is the key to this look!

      Awwww Pascale <3 haha

Love it for a photoshoot, but I dont think it’d be very wearable day-to-day. Several coats of mascara just take a long time to dry and regardless of whether we like the look, it will look to others like we use bad mascara or don’t know how to apply it right.

The Twiggy appeal is interesting & a pink lip is always cute, but I’m not sure about this.

LIke I said on Facebook, I hate the look. I don’t understand why someone would purposely want to look like a goopey-lashed crazy person. Just because someone says something is trending doesn’t make it a good look. At least you made your look the most ‘wearable’ that one could for spider lashes.

But honestly, if my lashes did that I’d chuck the mascara, wash my face and start over, furious lol.

It’s kind of strange to see spider lashes as a hot trend. I think the main reason we use makeup is to make ourselves more beautiful. But spider lashes?! They are ugly.

I love clumpy lashes, I rock them all the time with perfectly blended eyeshadow so it’s an even balance of mess and clean :)
