As a child, I was always fascinated with the Dead Sea and the possibility of floating effortlessly in open water. It wasn’t until recently that I discovered that H2O Float Spa right here in Toronto offers the same therapeutic experience in their salt-water tubs.
With two open-concept tubs and two enclosed pods (I went for a pod), the facility focuses entirely on this serene therapy, where you experience weightlessness and total sensory deprivation to restore balance to your mind and body. I didn’t know what to expect going into it, but it definitely was unlike anything I would have imagined.
Each room contains a personal shower to cleanse before and after your float. Each tub, filled with ten inches of water and 1000 lbs of dissolved Epson Salt, is kept at body temperature to allow for complete relaxation and eventually, the inability to distinguish which body parts are under water or above it (probably one of the most interesting aspects of the floating experience). In complete silence and darkness, you lose track of time and spatial awareness. It was a little hard to overcome mentally, especially if you are constantly busy and stressed, but once you allow yourself to completely let go and relax- it’s incredible.
I was told that one hour of floating is the equivalent of approximately four hours of deep sleep (it’s not uncommon to actually fall asleep in the water- something that most of us would never experience in our lifetime). It’s beneficial for reducing pain and tension while improving energy levels and flushing toxins from the body. It also is great for your mental state too- improving concentration, relieving fatigue and enabling a deeper meditative state.
Each session is 90 minutes, with 15 minutes to shower before and after your 1-hour float. The staff was so pleasant and informative; I was walked through the entire process beforehand so I would know what to expect. After my float, I was greeted with a cup of warm tea and we talked about my experience. The rates vary depending on what time you choose to go (I recommend the Insomniac Float at 10pm- you’ll sleep like a rock after!) and they even offer discounted packages and couples sessions.
It’s an experience I strongly encourage you to indulge in and truly feel what sensory deprivation can do for your mind and body.
