Hair Color Correcting 101

Hair Color Correcting 101

If you see your hair color veering away from a cool, ashy tone towards a yellow or brassy tone, you can make sense of what you’re seeing with a little refresher on color theory. Whether you’re a natural blonde or have turned flaxen with the help of a pro, your hair color is comprised of blue, yellow and red pigments that are deposited to the hair shaft. When you wash your hair, the blue pigments are the first to leave your hair and rinse down the drain, so your hair ends up shifting to an orange tone instead since you’re left with red and yellow pigments.

When your once-blonde hair or caramel highlights take a turn for the worse and turn brassy, you have a couple options. You can run to the salon and get your hair toned or you can handle the situation in the comfort of your own bathroom by adding the blue pigments back in to your hair with a color corrector. Just like makeup correctors, these violet-tinted products can help counteract a brassy look. They come in a multitude of categories, such as shampoos, conidtioners, treatments, sprays and more. Even if you aren’t blonde but find your hair color leaning towards the brassy side, you might be able to benefit from one of these rinse-out or leave-in treatments.

We’ve rounded up a few of our favorite formulas to help restore your crisp, cool hair color. Keep scrolling to see these color-correcting wonders!
