My beauty routine definitely has to change from season to season, because my skin changes! I have very dry skin in the Winter, but in the Summer, it’s combination oily and I find that my hydrating moisturizers and foundations are just too heavy for the warm, humid weather, and I tend to get oily and shiny really quickly. I wanted to try the Hourglass Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation ($55 USD / $64 CAD) to see if it would help keep my skin looking fresh and shine-free even through long days and warm weather.
This mattifying, anti-aging formula absorbs oil, evens out skin tone and is designed to wear all day long, so you don’t have to worry about your makeup melting off. It’s oil-free and water-resistent, so in theory it should hold up to even the toughest conditions. The pump-top bottle looks beautiful, just like all Hourglass products do… but it can look as pretty as it wants- we want it to live up to it’s claims, right?
I’ve been testing out the shade Shell, which is a pretty good match for my skin tone. It blends fairly nicely on the skin, but I recommend working in small areas and working quickly… it really is a liquid-to-powder formula, so is dries and sets to a powder finish (and once you hit that stage, there’s no returning). This is definitely a formula for very oily skin, because it was almost too drying and mattifying for my combination skin. It mattified my skin so much, it almost looked like it sucked the life out of my complexion, and I’m not one to want lots of ‘glow’ either. Perhaps I’ve just gotten very used to the “natural matte” or “satin” finish that most natural-looking foundations have these days, so to use a foundation that was ultra-mattifying just took me back a bit. One thing is for sure… if you have dry patches, this foundation will highlight them for all the world to see.
The formula really does hold up to it’s claims in terms of longevity and resilience. I even worked out with this foundation on and it didn’t budge- so I definitely think it can stand up to some warm weather and even a bit of splashing water. It gave me medium coverage, and even though it’s buildable, it sets so quickly that building the coverage just made my skin look a little cakey. I’m still trying to decide how much I love it… because I find it really powerful (almost too powerful for me)… but I think that those who suffer with extremely oily skin will appreciate this formula.
