From her tattoos to her makeup line, Kat Von D has always brought her artistic background to everything she creates, and the new Shade + Light Two Tone Blushes ($24) are no different.
These dual-shade blushes are the latest addition to her Shade + Light family (which currently contains a face palette and an eye palette). Contouring doesn’t have to be done with neutral tones—you can create dimension and play with light with color, too!
This new blush comes in seven different shades—each with two color-coordinating hues (and with adorable names of famous couples). The three shades I have are Mickey + Mallory (peach and porcelain pink), Samson + Delilah (poppy pink and pale coral) and Bonnie + Clyde (violet and light lilac). The other blushes include apricot, pink, fig and chestnut duos.
At first, I thought these compacts were split pan blushes and highlighters, but in fact either shade can really be used as a blush on the apples of the cheeks. They are both very pigmented and glide on beautifully. Each compact comes with a How-To card to show you three different ways to use the two-tone blushes. Essentially, the powders can be used separately or swirled together, and the placement of the lighter shade can create slimming or lifting effects.
The textures are all very matte, which can come across as a bit chalky. Typically I like satin blushes that have a slight bit of sheen, but these wear very flat on the skin (I recommend a sweep of a shimmery highlighter if you need some glow). On the plus side, I found them to be quite long-wearing, which is typically quite difficult to find in a powder blush. My favorite shade out of these three is Mickey + Mallory, because it is a little more subtle and easy to wear everyday, but I think I’ll be reaching for the other two more often once Spring hits!
Are you eyeing any of these blushes? Let me know!
