L’Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black Waterproof Mascara Review, Photos & Swatches

Published On February 8, 2012 | Reviews

Ever since I can remember, I’ve been a waterproof mascara girl.  My eyelashes are stick straight and grow down, with ZERO curl…so in order to keep them curled after using an eyelash curler, I have no choice but to reach for waterproof mascara.  Last year, I was getting my eyelashes permed and I loved the effect and I was able to try out and review a whole whackload of regular mascaras for you… now that the perm is gone and I’m giving my lashes a break, I had to go back to waterproof.  So I picked up this L’Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black Waterproof Mascara (About $6 USD / $8 CDN) because I had heard a lot of good things about it.

The Packaging

The mascara is super sleek, a matte black tube with gorgeous gold writing and cap, and a bristle brush (I’ve just never really been a fan of the plastic CoverGirl-LashBlast-type-mascara-wands).  I’d say its about a ‘medium’ sized brush, falling somewhere in between Bare Escentuals’ Flawless Definition wand and the Benefit badGAL Lash wand. It’s really the perfect size for my liking.

The Product

For being a waterproof mascara, I found this formula to be quite thin and liquidy.  Usually mascaras of this type are thicker, drier and therefore easier for me to apply.  I felt like I really had to build and build this mascara to get any effect.  I also found that you really have to tilt your head back when applying it- I’ve never encountered this problem before, but as I was warned by several of you, it transfers really easily and gets just above your upper lash line when applying it if you’re not careful.

The color is gorgeous- super rich black, really couldn’t ask for a better shade.  As for it’s volumizing properties…I’ve honestly seen better. It’s a pretty good everyday mascara for something for under $10 from the drugstore…but it didn’t blow me away. I’m starting to miss my Make Up For Ever Aqua Smoky Lash right about now actually… but all in all its a good “every day” mascara. No crazy volume, but a good amount of color and definition.  My curl stayed all day and the best part about this mascara is how nice it is to remove.  With a little bit of my Marcelle Renforcils Lash Fortifying Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover and a little massaging, this mascara comes off nicely with no flaking.

I’ll definitely continue to use this mascara on a daily basis, but I think I might try to look for something a little more dramatic for evening- I found that piling on the layers with this mascara just didn’t work. It got clumpy real fast- so I need a better, drier formula for the big thick lashes I’m looking for.

Summary

  • Price: About $6 USD / $8 CDN
  • Availability: Drugstore.com and other drugstores
  • Overall: A great everyday mascara! Super black and holds a curl nicely with no flaking.  Formula is a little more thin than usual, so it’s not as insanely volumizing as I wanted, but still good for daily wear.

i use this and it usually have to comb a few clumps out but generally i like it. my favourite is clinque but i can’t spend that much on mascara all the time. i would love it if you would review more drug store mascaras so maybe we can find a cheap one that’s awesome!

    Great review!! Thanks!!

Hey Jessica, my lashes are exactly the same. But ive been usin lilash. Expensive yes, worth it yes, my eyelashes are naturally curling and a little longer after 1 month. The results are amazing. My eyelashes are naturally stronger. I love it. It’s the most expensive beauty product I’ve bought, but totally worth it.

Yeah…that’s the main problem I’ve had with the L’oreal Voluminous mascaras-the formula is just too wet and it doesn’t thicken and it gets all over my lid

  • Giftprincessgoden07

Great review, I have the eyeliner version of these. Love them!

Thanks for the review Jessica! I recently reviewed Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes on my blog (unfortunately we’re never meant to be), and some of my readers recommended this to me. I’m a fan for whatever holds curls all day, but if the formula is wet and thin I might not get too much out of it. Oh well, life is not perfect!

I love the effects of this mascara on my lashes, but it always smudges on me. :/

I totally agree with the “clumping with extra applications”. That’s why I thought this mascara was just ok.

I’m using this exact product at the moment! I usually buy the regular (not waterproof) one and picked this up on accident. I love that the regular one has a curved brush. This one is definitely thin but after using it for a couple weeks it does dry out a bit in the tube and makes it much better in my opinion. I love that it comes off so easily too. Some say waterproof and I feel like I need a drill to get it off my lashes. I like putting this one on my lower lashes since I have major oil issues and it does great.

Oh thats good to hear! I’m definitely going to keep using it :)

I’m using this one right now!! I love how it doesn’t clump but it unfortunately smudges way too much on me. Other than the smudging, I love it.

    Amazing effect!

I loved the before and after pictures. How do you get your lashes so curled like that? Do you like heat up the curler or something? They look so nice!

    • http://www.beautezine.com/ Jessica

Nope I just use a regular lash curler

hmm i might pick this one up in the future! i’ve been using the body shop big curvy mascara (WP) and it’s a bit pricy and i’m not totally in love with it (despite being wowed in store by it!)

  • Farrah

It looks very natural on your eyes! But there’s a bit of clumping, does it smudge though?

I am in love with the non waterproof version of this mascara because it makes me look like I am wearing false lashes. I recently used the waterproof version for a wedding and it held up pretty well other than some flaking by the end of the evening. It is a much thinner watery formulation than the original though, which is a trait I am not fond of.

  • Cristina

Ive used the mascara several times over the years and I have always loved it! its a great mascara

  • Jdudek1001

Thanks for the review! I have very long lashes but they too stretch downward. I use this mascara daily and Absolutly LOVE it after a week or two. The product thickens and not only holds the curl from the curler but and great volume with minimal application. Give it another try soon.
