MAC Haute & Naughty Too Black Lash Mascara

Earlier this month, MAC launched the MAC Haute & Naughty Too Black Lash Mascara ($20 USD / $23.50 CAD)- which, even though it looks identical to the original, the “Too Black” in the title helps to distinguish the formulas (as does the purple cap, instead of the hot pink one found on the original).  This mascara is quite interesting, because it’s really two mascara’s in one!

This “Too Black” formula basically works the exact same as the original (which is one of my favorite mascaras, by the way), only this shade is an even deeper shade of black for an extra-shocking contrast. If you have the original and plan on repurchasing it, just go for this one instead… it’s shockingly black and defines the eye incredibly well.

Like I said, this product is really two mascaras in one- not two different formulas, but it really shows how much of a difference the actual applicator brush can make!  The tube features two twist-off caps; one with a tighter stopper than the other, so it cleans the brush tip off much more, for a soft, naturally-defined look (I’m calling this the “Natural Definition” brush).  The other cap really reveals the same brush head, just with a larger stopper, so there is more mascara on the brush (thus, delivering a thicker, more “Volumized” application).

I love how you can really choose the look you’re going for.  I find I prefer the Natural Definition look, because the Volumizing look can be a bit clumpy if you’re not careful, but it does make for a very travel-friendly mascara since it allows you to choose the effect you want, all from the same tube.  However, because the wand is so skinny for the “Natural Definition” brush (it does have to fit within the wand of the “Volumizing” brush), it makes it a little flimsy- but really it just takes a little getting used to. The mascara itself is lightweight, super black and doesn’t flake or smudge!

Whichever end you choose to go with- I definitely recommend sticking with the cleaner, “Natural Definition” brush for lower lashes- it separates and defines them really nicely.  Also, if you apply too much mascara and your lashes start to clump, just run the “Natural Definition” brush through your lashes if there’s no lash comb nearby! It works pretty well in a pinch.

Summary

  • Price: $20 USD / $23.50 CAD for 0.33oz / 9g
  • Availability: MAC
  • Overall: This is a pretty neat mascara- I love the new & improved shade that is extra black for a striking look. The Volumizing brush can be a little clumpy, but the Natural Definition brush is one of my favourites! The formula is nice and long-wearing too!
