MAC Mineralized Skinfinish Natural Review, Photos & Swatches

Published On February 17, 2012 | Reviews

I’ve rekindled my love with MAC Mineralized Skinfinish Natural ($29 USD / $34 CDN)… why did we ever lose touch? Check it out.

The Packaging

MAC Mineralized Skinfinish Natural looks identical to their shimmery, colourful MSF’s only this one comes in natural-matte skin tone shades. The baked dome-shaped powder sits in a fairly large compact with a clear plastic top (making it easy to see shades, which is nice).  It’s important to be careful with these powders though, they are really fragile (and breaking one isn’t fun).  I’d keep something else in my purse for touch-ups.

The Product

These silky powders are fantastic for setting your makeup because they feel light as air and give a slight hint of color to help even our skin tone.  I like to dust it all over with a large fluffy brush to set my makeup without making it look heavy or over-done.  Many people say applying it with a dense kabuki brush gives more coverage and can be used as a powder foundation- but I’ve tried this many times with little success…there just isn’t enough pigmentation in there for me to use it as foundation.

The shades don’t come in the regular “MAC” range (ie. NC20, NW30, etc).  They come in Light, Light Plus, Medium, Medium Plus…etc, so there is no way to define the cool or warm undertones. While they are all quite neutral in tone, I found that alternating colours are slightly cool and slightly warm. So Light would be an NW shade, Light Plus would be an NC shade (which is what I use), Medium would be NW, Medium Plus would be NC, and so on and so forth.  That’s something to keep in mind when choosing your shade, because I remember the first time I bought Medium, it didn’t quite look so great on me… when I tried Medium Plus- BAM! Perfect match and tone.  Same thing with my more pale skin now, Light Plus (shown here) is a perfect match.

A luxurious, fine powder that looks completely natural on the skin and gives a gorgeous finish… I like that even my normal-to-dry skin can still look fabulous with it on. A little pricey, but these powders last a LONG time. Take good care of them, and they will stick around for a while.

Summary

  • Price: $29 USD / $34 CDN for 10g / 0.35oz
  • Availability: MAC
  • Overall: A fantastic setting powder that leaves skin looking completely natural and beautifully even. Can be used over makeup or alone (although I don’t find it very pigmented to even out my skin on its own). Very fragile, so be careful and it will last a long time!

I wish they are not that fragile so that I can bring them for touch-ups!

I wish these didn’t rely on Bismuth Oxychloride for their beautiful finish- the bloody stuff causes a rash on my skin :I
If you want to keep one in your purse for touch ups, I’d suggest looking through your collection for a velvet or flock mini bag- often seen with a lot of the higher end products, and throw it in that before your purse/makeup bag :)

Your really sensitive to it then. I get irritation when it’s use in higher quantities in foundation (Bare Minerals) but the amount in this product and other MSF doesn’t bother me for some reason.

I usually don’t wear any mac face products unless it’s like loose powders/prep n prime etc… but I love their MSF!!! I got one in medium.

I have always heard great things about MSFN, but unfortunately the shades don’t go quite fair enough for me. I really wish MAC would extend their shade range down to include, say, NC/W 00 and 05. It would really set them apart as a true artists brand!

I love this stuff!! I use it as an everyday foundation!

I use this over my moisturizer and it gives me an amazing finish. I always get complimented and asked what im wearing. Im in Medium Plus.

This is my favorite Mac item, and the only one I’ve gone back and replenished continuously! I love it, and find that if I used a tinted moisturizer (I use Origins Vita-Zing), some concealer and then apply the MSF natural with a kabuki it gives me the coverage I need, without a heavy foundation feel. I would typically just wear it that way for running errands, but definitely use it over foundation to set it when I’m going for a full face of makeup! Love it!

I’ve always used either Make Up Forever’s HD Powder or MAC’s Prep + Prime Transparent Finishing Powder to set my makeup…but lately, I’ve been wanting to try a colored setting powder to see if I like the coverage and finish better. I might have to check these out!

I’ve always wanted a mineralized skin finish but I can’t decide whether to get a natural or a color finish :/ what’s your opinion if I had to choose just one?

    • Blysse27

The MSF natural is very different than the colored MSFs- the naturals are really just a powder with a nice soft finish, but the colored MSFs vary from a sheen to shimmery with glitter…really depends on what you’re going for :)

It’s always nice to revisit an old love…makeup love, that is :)

That’s a great tip for colour matching! I never knew it’s like that. I still have my Medium one to go through, so… I think I should try Medium Plus or Light Plus when I’m done with this

ahhh that’s so pretty! i never know what’s at mac because i’m afraid to shop in there! the price tags are quite steep D: however, this is so nice … decisions decisions!

  • jem83

How could they call it Mineralized if there is Dimethicone at the third place?

  • DuchessAmy

I want to get one of these so badly but I’m afraid it will break me out :( Studio Fix Powder Foundation breaks me out like crazy, Studio Fix Fluid breaks me out if I use it 2 days in a row & Studio Finish Concealer breaks me out if I use it anywhere but under my eyes. The only thing I can use if the Blot Powder without a problem & I don’t even know which ingredient I’m allergic to.

Try going into a mac store/counter, and tell them you need them to look up the ingredients in their giant book- look for an ingredient that’s in all three!

Thank you so much, I will definitely do that very soon :)

I hear this great to even use over foundation as a powder

I have cool undertones, but I use C1 in mac face and body. Which shade would you recommend?

I have this in light as I’m super pale and it really transforms my makeup! I love it, and I love your reviews! I found you by chance by searching for swatches of the Bobbi Brown Beige Shimmer Brick! Best find ever!!!
