It’s no secret I’m obsessed with the Maison Margiela REPLICA fragrance collection; I’ve pretty much talked about each and ever single launch in the line here on Beautezine. Not only are the scents beautiful, intriguing and unique, but the entire theme of replicating memories through scents is something I’m just so fascinated by. So of course I was beyond excited to hear Maison Margiela is launching an entire new REPLICA collection of Eau de Parfums—this time inspired by fantasies and dreams instead of memories.
The original Eau de Toilette range was launched in 2012 with three scents and has since expanded to include ten fragrances and two oil-based fragrance filters, as well as travel sizes and scented candles. As noted on the bottles, these scents were designed to replicate familiar scents and moments of varying locations and periods, like how Beach Walk perfectly captures the scent of sunkissed, salty skin, strolling along the beach or how Lazy Sunday Morning brings you right back to rolling around in soft bed linens on a sunny weekend morning.
This new gender-anonymous collection takes that sensorial experience to a whole other level as they replicate four familiar fantasies and dreams; Dancing On The Moon, Flying, Soul of the Forest and Across Sands. The packaging pays homage to the original collection with the same apothecary-style bottles and garment tag labels while taking on a cosmic, mysterious twist with metallic silver accents and an inky black ombré gradient sprayed down the glass.
I can’t wait to get my hands on these bottles—but until then, I was able to sniff out some lab samples so I can share my thoughts on each with you.
In order to imagine the scents, it’s easier to fantasize about the narrative—if dancing on the moon or flying actually smelled like something, what would it be? Reading the descriptions of the fantasy really allows you to appreciate each scent so much more.
Dancing On The Moon
A lone dancer, robed in white swirls gracefully across the dark side of the moon beneath a spotlight, their ethereal moves casting pale shadows on the lunar landscape. In one hand, a bouquet of opalescent white flowers shines with a mineral glow.
Dancing On The Moon is a bright, mineral fragrance that opens with moonflower and white jasmine flower, then warms up with ambergris, musk and vanilla. This one is by far my favorite out of the entire collection and it reminds me a tiny bit of Beach Walk, yet a bit more floral. It’s really beautiful, incredibly clean and ethereal.
The human desire to fly remains definitively out of reach: an ultimate high that thrill-seekers everywhere aim to capture for a split second of ecstasy. It is a blast of icy fresh air, like Icarus—too close to the sun. Dare to escape gravity and embark on an epic adventure in the sky.
Flying comes in close second for me—it is an airy citrus built on a seductive base of musk and moss with top notes of bergamot, neroli and orange flower. It’s fresh, yet earthy—and the citrus gives this burst of invigorating, uplifting energy.
Soul Of The Forest
The spirits of nature belong to some of mankind’s oldest mythologies. Does the forest have a soul: a dryad skipping through the trees, perhaps? An invisible presence vibrating in the very peripheries of our human awareness? Shapeless, silent, and untouchable, the soul of the forest sings a soft melody of tree song, tasting of the sweet sap of the gods.
Soul Of The Forest is much more down to earth (literally, the first two were basically about leaving it). It’s fresh, woody and very green, with notes of sap, patchouli and fir balsam layered on top of Atlas cedarwood and moss. I’m amazed at how beautiful and intriguing the smell of a forest can be (this one is definitely an enchanted forest).
Be seduced by the road less travelled: enter the mirage and perhaps you will find an extra-terrestrial oasis. Fruits and flowers bloom amongst the dunes, thriving in the dry heat and the endless expanses of desert. As night falls on the caravan trail, merchants tell dangerous tales of the Silk route—their words shrouded in mystery and darkness.
Across Sands is perhaps one of the most unique I’ve ever smelled before; a spicy and fruity blend of oud, dates, cinnamon and patchouli. It’s slightly sweet, yet balanced beautifully by the cocktail of spices. It’s hard for me to describe it—probably because it’s inspired by otherworldly mysticism.
The Maison Margiela REPLICA Eau de Parfums retail for $180 (3.4oz) each and is available now at select Maison Margiela boutiques and retailers (it isn’t available yet on sephora.com but it should be soon)!shop this story
