Make Up For Ever changed the way I feel about red lips last year when they first launched the Make Up For Ever Aqua Rouge ($24 USD / $27 CAD), a two-step liquid lip colour and gloss top coat. The concept was something that I’ve seen before in the past, but this formula took the cake with it’s shocking pigmentation, smooth texture, comfortable wear and physics-defying wear time. Since I first tried out the formula, I’ve been able to wear bold, red lipstick with total confidence and no fear of smudges, fading, migrating or transfering. It has been very liberating.
This Summer, Make Up For Ever has expanded their shade range to include a variety of stunning, colorful shades that I was left wishing for after the original line-up launched. From bold fuchsia to daring orange to stunning coral, five new shades have been added to the line-up that is sure to brighten some smiles this season.
I’ve been playing with two of the shades recently, including 18 Coral and 20 Baby Pink. Each of the shades maintains the same incredible quality that I fell in love with- a creamy texture that applies beautifully and layers nicely (let the product set in between layers for a smoother application), bold pigmentation that leaves you with full-coverage colour, all-day wear that won’t transfer or budge and a juicy, clear top coat that you can add for a pouty finish.
When it comes to a liquid lip color that is as long lasting as this one, a bit of dryness is expected. The difference that the Make Up For Ever Aqua Rouge makes is that the dryness is bearable. In fact, it’s really not that bad. Your lips will feel slightly tight, but it’s not a dehydrating, uncomfortable feeling like I’ve experienced from other similar products and even from regular matte lipsticks. The good news is that a layer of lip balm or the glossy topcoat really makes it a lot more comfortable and really takes away any tight feeling.
They can also go on a little bit patchy if you’re not careful, especially with lighter colors like these. I feel like I’ll still stick to my bold reds for this formula, because I am a little more comfortable with pink and coral shades in regular lipstick textures and don’t mind reapplying them.
