Last summer, Make Up For Ever made many people nervous when they announced the reformulation of their iconic HD Foundation. More often than not, “new and improved” formulas leave loyal customers disappointed. When Ultra HD launched, it was a completely different story and blew makeup artists, beauty editors and makeup junkies out of the water—they really made an amazing product even better.
This summer, they are doing it all over again with their much-loved Face & Body foundation. Say hello to Make Up For Ever Water Blend Foundation—the new generation of face and body makeup you’re going to fall in love with.
Face & Body has been used and loved by many people around the world for years—especially professionals. Water Blend takes everything you loved about Face & Body and makes it even better—just like they did with Ultra HD.
First of all, the formula is made with 80% water to deliver instant hydration to the skin. It’s infused with pro-vitamin B5, glycerin and mango butter to lock in that moisture and keep it comfortable all day. It has that unique, water-gel texture that Face & Body had, but it dries down to more of a natural-satin finish. The swatches below may look patchy, but I assure you it applies very nicely (I just had to get enough product onto my skin so the shade would be visible and the texture is very thin).
The coverage is sheer but buildable (you can really build it up to medium-full coverage by layering it), leaves skin with a natural glow and looking bare. It’s truly the closest thing to a second-skin effect I’ve found. I like to apply it with my fingers or a stippling brush, but I would avoid using a sponge (which can absorb too much product) or a dense synthetic brush (which doesn’t buff it into the skin enough). It takes a little while to work it into the skin, but once it sinks in you’ll feel it (this is why I prefer using my fingers).
Here’s what two layers of Water Blend looks like on the skin (I used shade Y325):
What makes Water Blend so much better is the fact it is completely waterproof. For a lightweight, breathable, hydrating foundation, the words “waterproof” and “transfer-proof” are typically never seen. Even on hot, humid summer days, this foundation will keep you looking flawless from morning to night without any touch-ups. I’ve already done a few bridal makeup trials with this foundation and it looked beautiful all day.
An interesting tip I learned from Trinidad Rivas, National Education Director for Make Up For Ever Canada, was to use the hydrating formula throughout the day to add extra moisture and coverage to the complexion. Using a finger or a small brush, tap a little foundation onto dry areas (like under the eyes) for a burst of hydration and a little extra coverage—perfect for a mid-day pick-me-up!
Here are all of the shades side-by-side (swatches of each on my arm further down):
Make Up For Ever has also updated and expanded their shade range. The shade numbering system now follows the same one as Ultra HD (so if you know your shade there, you’ll easily find your shade in Water Blend). The formula is available in 20 shades to suit the lightest to darkest skin tones out there.
The “R” shades (those with a red/pink undertone) and the “Y” shades (those with a yellow undertone) are nearly split 50/50 in the line-up, and the shades blend beautifully together to create a custom color if you want to get creative.
Make Up For Ever Water Blend Foundation retails for $43 and is available online at Sephora.
