There’s a fine balance between glowing and shiny and most products veer a little too far into the latter camp to be considered a beauty staple. With the onslaught of strobing and highlighting products released in the last year, many people have been walking around looking like mini disco balls—especially when the temps start to rise and you have to factor in a sweaty face on top of your already glistening brow.
When the Marc Jacobs Beauty Coconut line launched, I was drawn in by the snazzy, sophisticated white packaging and the pretty tropical scent each product exuded, but it was the highlighter that caught my eye. On a constant quest to find one that doesn’t veer too far into Shine Central, I was eager to give it a shot.
I shook up the Dew Drops Coconut Gel Highlighter ($55) and put a generous pump on the back of my hand, only to realize this bottle has some serious light inside it. Only after I tried (and failed) to rub the entire pump into my hand and arm did I realize that a little goes a long way. The second time I tried it, I did the sensible thing and mixed just half a pump in with my foundation and that gave the right amount of glow on my complexion.
After playing with it for a couple weeks, I spoke with Hung Vanngo, Marc Jacobs Beauty brand ambassador and celebrity makeup artist, who confirmed what I learned the hard way: “It says drop so just use a drop, not a whole pump.” (Lesson learned.)
If you want to go makeup-free, Vanngo suggests mixing a drop in with your regular SPF for a subtle glow that keeps you protected. What is really great about the formulation is that it’s super-lightweight thanks to the gel base—something you don’t seem to find in the non-powder variants and the coconut and provitamin B5 offer up a smooth, hydrated complexion. For a bit of an extra glow, blend the Dew Drops into your décolleté and shoulders. (Rumour has it that Vanngo used an entire bottle on JLo. When asked if I would turn into her if I did the same thing, he laughed and didn’t respond.)
While we’ve been singing the praises of this particular product, the lineup has lots to offer and comes inspired by Marc’s love of coconut water. The collection also includes the Under(Cover) Perfecting Coconut Face Primer (which has been around for a little while now and has become a cult favourite thanks to its refreshing texture and ultra-hydrating formula), Re(Cover) Perfecting Coconut Setting Mist to set and refresh makeup, O!Mega Bronze Perfect Tan, an oversized bronzing compact for face and body (plus The Bronze Bronzer Brush to apply it) and, the newest addition, Under(Cover) Perfecting Coconut Eye Primer.
The entire Marc Jacobs Beauty Coconut Collection is available now online at sephora.ca. The bronzer and brush are both limited-edition but the rest of the collection is here to stay!shop this story
