Marcelle Eye Makeup Removers

I’ve already raved many times about the Marcelle Renforcils Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover, but I’ve recently been trying out some of the others in the line. Marcelle is well-known for their gentle and effective makeup removers… so I’m trying to figure out which one is my favorite overall! Remember, everyone searches for something different in an eye makeup remover, so be sure to read the pros and cons about each product to find what is best for you!

Oil Free Eye Makeup Remover Lotion

The Oil-Free Makeup Remover Lotion ($12.50 CDN) is a great makeup remover for those who don’t use waterproof eye makeup, or just to have on hand for quick touch-ups or fix-its if you make a mistake. It’s super gentle… I could pour this stuff in my eyes and it wouldn’t burn (please don’t though) and it leaves a perfectly clean, residue-free finish.  I was actually surprised at how well it took off my long-wearing eyeliner, but I had to rub too hard to get it to take off my waterproof mascara (always the ultimate test)!

One thing I strongly dislike about this product is the packaging- it has the same flip-top as the Cleansing Water (that I adore by the way), but I just cannot pour it out without spilling/dripping. Maybe it’s just me, but I’m considering putting it into another bottle so I can use it without frustration every time.

Gentle Makeup Remover for Sensitive Eyes

I’m very cultured when it comes to dual phase makeup removers- I wear waterproof mascara everyday, so it’s pretty much essential for me to use an oil-based makeup remover to get it off without rubbing my eyes raw. I’ve tried many, and this Gentle Makeup Remover for Sensitive Eyes ($14.25 CDN) definitely comes out on top. Just as good as the MAC one (which I’ve gone through at least 10 bottles of) but for less damage on the wallet. To use it, you simple shake the bottle to homogenize the two phases, pour some onto a cotton pad and hold it on your eyes for about 10 seconds, then swipe the makeup off.

I like this bottle much more, because it’s a simple twist-off top with a good size opening. The downside about this type of makeup remover is that it will leave an oily residue, so I like to finish off with a swipe of cleansing water afterwards to get rid of that oily feeling (works like a charm). Super effective- blasts through all sorts of long-wear and waterproof makeup with ease and no stinging or rubbing!

Eye Makeup Remover Cloths

I’ve never been a “wipe” person… for some reason I just never fell in love with them. Perhaps its the unnecessary rubbing of a cloth against my eyes or face that turns me off of them, but I know there are lots of people out there who swear by them.  These Eye Makeup Remover Cloths ($12.50 CDN for 30) are a lot smaller then the typical face wipes because they are meant only for your eyes. Fragrance free (awesome!) and oil-free, these removers are good for non-waterproof makeup only.I found I had to rub way to hard (to the point of making my eyes burn) to remove long-wear makeup and these clothes didn’t budge my waterproof mascara. They did really well on removing regular makeup though.

I like how the package actually comes with two smaller packages (drying out too quickly is always a concern of wipe users)… and the re-sealable sticker actually does a pretty good job.

Soothing Eye Makeup Remover Gel

This eye makeup remover gel looks and feels exactly like my beloved Renforcils Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover Gel, however this one is not good for waterproof makeup. The Soothing Eye Makeup Remover Gel ($12.50 CDN) wasn’t that good on long-wear makeup at all.  It is super soothing though, they even recommend to use it as a cooling and refreshing eye mask because it’s so soothing and non-irritating. The ingredients help to reduce puffiness and dark circles, so that’s always a bonus. However, it definitely didn’t live up to my hopes as an eye makeup remover, simply because it wasn’t nearly as effective as I needed.

I tested out the various makeup removers on three products to demonstrate their effectiveness.  On my hand I have Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner (top), Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Perversion (middle) and L’Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black Waterproof Mascara (bottom). I thought testing two common long-wear products as well as a waterproof mascara would be a good test- and here’s the results.

  • Left: Marcelle Essentials Gentle Makeup Remover for Sensitive Eyes (Dual-Phase); this one swiped through all three with absolute ease, but you can see quite a bit of oily residue left over.
  • Middle: Marcelle Essentials Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover Lotion; this one did quite well on the long-wear products but struggled a bit with the mascara. You can see how clean the finish is, with no oily residue.
  • Right: Marcelle Eye Makeup Remover Cloths; I had to rub too hard to get the makeup off, so this one definitely didn’t stand up to my long-wear makeup.

Finally, I tested the Soothing Eye Makeup Remover Gel after I removed all the residue from the previous tests, and it still couldn’t remove all the makeup. I massaged it in for a good 30 seconds, so I must say I’m not too happy with the effectiveness of this one.

So how do these all compare to my Renforcils? The only one really worth comparing would be the Gentle Makeup Remover for Sensitive Eyes (the dual-phase) because it’s the only one meant for waterproof makeup. The Gentle Makeup Remover is more effective for sure, but the Renforcils leaves no residue and helps to promote lash strength and growth. I’ll still stick with Renforcils on a daily basis, but I will reach for the Gentle Makeup Remover when I’m wearing heavy eye makeup and need some extra help removing it.

Summary

  • Price: $12.50 CDN to $14.25 CDN
  • Availability: Marcelle and various drugstores
  • Selection: See all eye makeup removers from Marcelle here.
  • Overall: Each eye makeup remover has its own purpose, but overall I only found the Gentle Makeup Remover for Sensitive Eyes and the Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover Lotion to be worth while for any sort of long wear eye makeup (not even waterproof, just long-wear). The Soothing Gel really wasn’t able to do much besides soothe my eyes, and the clothes were convenient but I found I had to rub too hard.

I would probably try the Gentle Makeup Remover because my eyes are very sensitive. I am glad that the gentle one did a better job.

I use it for that reason but always wash my face thoroughly afterwards as the oil of the cleaner need to cut with as soap. ;)

i am always looking for a good eye make up remover. I find the mascara comes up but it is harder to get the eyeliner between the lashes

I like how affordable it is but I’ve never seen this brand around, is it Canadian? I use my Lancome Eye makeup remover though and that’s my favorite!

I really need to get myself a new eye makeup remover..I’ve been using Neutrogena’s Oil-Free but I find that it doesn’t work very well on water-resistant mascara

How do these compare to the Marcelle Renforcils Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover? Is this your favourite still?

I currently use Clinique but the Gentle Makeup Remover cost a little less and seems to work great. I also like that it is hypo-allergenic.

I’d love to try these (especially the Renforcils, as I have eyelash-falling-out issues), but I’ve never really seen them around. Do you know if they are available in the US?

No, its Canadian. However I do believe they ship to US online
