Maybelline Color Whisper Lipsticks Review, Photos & Swatches

I’ve heard the “whispers” going around about these new Maybelline Color Whisper Lipsticks ($7.49 USD / $9.99 CAD), so I was super excited when this gorgeous array of colors arrived on my desk. Maybelline has seriously been the Queen of Color this Spring season, first with their launch of the new Color Sensational Vivids Lipsticks, and now these weightless, shiny lip colors.

Available in 20 shades, the range varies from sheer to medium to full coverage (it varies between the shades, but in general the darker the shade, the more pigmented it is). They have gorgeous jewel-toned caps which show the color of the lipstick (which I appreciate, since the Vivids line all had the same color cap). The smell slightly like fruit loops to me, which I’m not going to lie- I kind of love.

• Coral Ambition: Peachy coral
• Cherry On Top: Fuchsia pink
• Who Wore It Red-er: Red-ish pink

• Berry Ready: Scarlet red
• A Plum Prospect: Violet berry

As I mentioned, they vary quite dramatically in terms of pigmentation. The lighter shades like One Size Fits Pearl and Petal Rebel are quite sheer, the mid-tone shades like Who Wore It Red-er and Orange Attitude have medium pigmentation and some of the deeper shades like Berry Ready have a full coverage finish.

They glide onto the lips really smoothly and the color is quite buildable for any of the shades. They feel slick and weightless on the lips thanks to the silicone gel base- not thick or tacky at all. They also have a gorgeous shine and feel incredibly comfortable on the lips as well.

They aren’t very long lasting, because of their light texture and glossy finish- if you accidentally smudge your lips and any point during wear time, it’s going to smudge (since they don’t set). I find this factor makes it a little more difficult (or should I say, ‘scary’) to wear the deeper, more pigmented hues… I don’t feel too confident with them becuase they aren’t locked in place. They also are a little more difficult to apply because of the soft, slippery texture.

I definitely prefer the lighter shades in the range; any of the sheer or medium pigmented hues are easy and quite fool proof to apply (even without a mirror). I’m sure may out there will love the rich, deeper shades… but I need something that is going to lock down and stay put.  These are an excellent compromise though for great range of color with a comfortable feel.
