Last year, I discovered Maybelline’s Master Strobing Stick (remember this video?) and have used it every day since to highlight my cheekbones and add a little extra glow to my complexion. I’ve whittled the stick down to nearly nothing and just when I was about to go pick up another one, Maybelline’s newest strobing star arrived: the Master Strobing Liquid. Of course, I decided to give it a try.
The illuminating liquid comes in three shades; 100 Light/Iridescent, a silvery pink (my go-to shade of the bunch), 200 Medium/Nude Glow, a peachy nude, and 300 Deep/Gold, a warm gold.
You might think that only medium or deep complexions could use the 200 and 300 shades, but I disagree. Each shade is sheer enough to be beautiful on a variety of complexions, it all depends on what undertone and look you’re going for.
The liquid formula makes this particular strobing product a little more versatile than the stick version. You can mix it into other products like moisturizer, primer or foundation; you can apply it precisely on top of makeup for a targeted effect; or—my favourite—you can rub it between your hands and lightly press all over your face for a soft glow.
It works perfectly for one of my go-to makeup hacks: mix some of this liquid illuminator into a full-coverage, matte foundation (like this one) to add luminosity and life to the skin while still achieving a totally flawless complexion.
The texture is quite light and it blends well into the the skin. It has a very reflective finish, but it’s not packed with chunks of shimmer or glitter at all, meaning skin looks healthy, hydrated and naturally luminous.
Is it going to replace my beloved Master Strobing Stick? I don’t think so, but mainly because I prefer the original for targeted highlights, and this new one mixed into my products for an all-over glow. I’ll definitely be making room in my makeup bag for both.
