I’ve always been a huge fan of drugstore mascaras… and a new formula from Maybelline is set to launch in drugstores by the end of the month! This new Maybelline Mega Plush Volum’ Express Mascara ($8.99 CAD) is formulated with a gel-mousse to give a light-as-air texture for soft, supple lashes. With 40% less hard waxes than traditional mascaras, this one promises huge volume with no flaking.
The brush tip itself is pretty interesting, although it takes a bit of getting used to. The brush itself is big and lush, great for building volume but a bit tough at getting into small areas like the corners of the eyes. The real difference is in the wand… there is a tiny section below the brush head that is very flexible, and allows the brush to bend easily. I’m not sure if this really does anything special, but I did notice I could contort the brush a little more to my liking.
The formula is very thin. I usually stay away from this type of formula because my poker straight lashes need something a little more dry, but for those with already-curled lashes, you’ll love it. It really glides on with no clumping, coating lashes from roots to tip, and the separation is wonderful. Make sure to tilt your head far back though, because it’s so runny it transfers to your eyelid easily by accident. It isn’t groundbreaking in its volume-creating abilities, but how it makes your lashes feel and look. Very soft and naturally voluminous. It’s also really easy to remove.
Personally, I like the mascara, but since i’m a waterproof mascara user, I’m going to hold out and hope for a waterproof version! I think mascara junkies will like trying this one out, because the formula is noticeably different.

- Overall: A pretty interesting mascara; I can definitely feel a more smooth formula. It’s very thin, so be careful of smudges. It builds volume nicely without clumping or flaking. Nothing ground-breaking in terms of volume, but a nice formula to try either way. I’m hoping for a waterproof version for myself though!
