When most women imagine their dream lipstick it goes like this: longwearing, serious colour payout and hydrating. Most lipsticks hit maybe two of the three, if that. So often it’s a matter of layering your balm with your lip colour or using a primer to keep it in place. And if you’re going matte, forget about soft, hydrated lips.
Of course, that was until I tried the new Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink ($12) liquid lipstick. I was challenged to put on this pigmented lip colour (the chosen shade being the bright orangey-red Heroine) and go through a spin class (and not just any spin class, but rather SoulCycle that has its own insane cult following) and see how the colour fared on the other side of the sweatiest hour of life.
The verdict? Truthfully, I barely lasted the entire class (and definitely had to stop a couple times), but the lip colour was totally unscathed. Even after guzzling two bottles of water, eating a very healthy post-workout meal of tacos and washing our face, the SuperStay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick didn’t budge. Seriously, six hours and counting and it didn’t move (but, then again, neither could I after that class).
Let’s back up a bit and look at some of the highlights. Maybelline’s latest colourful lip innovation comes in 10 shades, ranging from nude to wine and everything in between, and promises 16 hours of comfortable wear (“comfortable” being the operative word) past every coffee, meeting, meal and smooch you can throw at it.
After the death by spin, I tried a couple more colours applied bright and early to see if it could really last the entire day, opting for the more neutral-pink Dreamer and mauvey-pink Lover. Admittedly, the lip colour felt a touch tacky for about an hour or so, but still didn’t go anywhere. After two cups of coffee, breakfast, a subway ride and another cup of coffee at the office, not only did I not need to touch up, but my lips felt like they were completely bare.
Out of habit, I reapplied at one point and that was where my only complaint came through. While most matte colours dry out my lips from the get go (and require multiple applications throughout the day), my lips stayed comfortable all day until that reapplication. It seems that the formula does a whole host of good, but when you put on a second coat, that’s when the dry flakiness comes into play. So, heed my warning and put on one generous coat in the morning and then follow the less-is-more rule until the next morning.
And if you actually want to take it off before bed, you’d do well to remember that only an oil-based makeup remover or good face wipe (we found these worked really well) will do the trick.
Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink Liquid Lipsticks retail for about $12 each and are available now at drugstores.shop this story
