Situated right downtown in the gorgeous Shangri-La hotel, the Miraj Hammam Spa is truly a hidden gem, considering you wouldn’t even know it’s there unless you’re a frequenter of the hotel or had a friend indulge themselves for a day and share their experience with you. Well, it’s time to one-up your friend and be the one to indulge. Truthfully, you could sit in the waiting room of this spa and still feel entirely spoiled.
Together with Caudalie Paris, the spa is rooted in rich Middle Eastern history—the word “Hammam” meaning “silent doctor” and (without sounding too cheesy) it provided a magical experience from start to finish that would undoubtedly make Jasmine jealous beyond belief. The signature treatment I received was the Hammam & Gommage—an authentic Middle Eastern treatment—and it was unlike anything I’d ever experienced in a spa.
Starting in a sarong wrapped around me, I was guided into a eucalyptus-scented heated room, and then into an even hotter room. Sitting on a marble counter you’re literally sweating buckets—as the steam opens up your pores and mind, detoxifying your body in the process. And though you’re in the heat for a while, the time passes as your body completely relaxes and detoxes at the same time. After about 15 minutes, you’re brought back into the first heated room, where you’re laid down on your sarong and given a full body exfoliation with eucalyptus-infused black Moroccan soap (atop Jerusalem gold marble, of course). While the scrub and detox feel amazing, this treatment is not for the body shy, as you’re almost completely in the buff and scrubbed head to toe and then rinsed off—though they are entirely professional about it, as you’d expect in such a fantastic place.
After the treatment, you’re brought into a relaxation room that resembles what I’d imagine to be Jasmine’s palace in real life, and served a Middle Eastern tea, baclava and grapes as you lounge languidly on the decadent daybeds for as long as you please. No detail is spared in the Miraj Hammam Spa—everything from the daybeds, to cushions to the treatment rooms—you’ll feel like you’re living the lap of luxury and that you’ve been transported much further than a mere five floors above a major Toronto street.
