The NARS Fall 2013 Collection includes two NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils ($25 USD / $30 CAD). This limited-edition collection features an array of smouldering hues and matte textures for an ultra sophisticated and modern look. Available online and on counters July 15, 2013.
The two shades in this collection include Mysterious Red, a matte crimson, and Paimpol, a pale pink chiffon. Mysterious Red is the only limited-edition shade out of the two, and they both come in the typical NARS Velvet Matte Lip pencil packaging. These pencils do require a jumbo sharpener as they do not twist up.
I am quite a fan of the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils- I find them to be super lightweight, long-wearing and super easy to apply because they are in pencil form. I just love jumbo pencils in general, for their ability to line the lips with precision, yet fill them in easily too. These two shades are very different, but I’ve got a soft spot for each of them!
Mysterious Red is ultra pigmented and shockingly red- it’s an incredible red lip that glides on with ease, doesn’t bleed, looks super matte and feels very light on the lips. It is a little more drying out of the two, but what I love most is how white it makes my teeth look! It’s just that perfect cool red that brightens your smile while giving you a beautiful, retro look.
Paimpol is much more sheer, pale and has satin finish to it. I can’t really explain why I like it… because I just do. It’s still a little drying, it doesn’t have good pigmentation, it doesn’t last very good… so everything is really telling me that I shouldn’t like it, but I do! I’ve actually worn it a lot since I got it- I think it just gives a ‘glow’ to your lips that I haven’t ever really found with any other lip color. It’s hard to explain- but if you can try it out, I recommend it!
The only thing I don’t really like about these pencils is the packaging- I really wish they had a twist-up mechanism because (especially with jumbo pencils) there is so much waste when sharpening. Also- the cap sometimes creates a bit of a suction or pressure inside and pops open a few seconds after I put it on. I’ve found loose caps in my makeup bag several times (and smeared lipstick everywhere), so I have to make sure I pay extra attention when putting the lid on. It’s not a huge deal, but it’s a minor inconvenience that just shouldn’t be an issue.
