Latest Obsession: NEST Black Tulip

Nest Black Tulip Eau de Parfum

With only a quick glance at my fragrance collection—rows of bright pastel-toned glass—you could easily deduce one thing: I like my scents light and summer-y. If its fresh with hints of citrus, I probably love it. Less likely to stir my beach-loving soul? Floriental juices (that’s floral-meets-oriental), with their strong, warm notes. But then I spotted Nest’s Black Tulip Eau de Parfum ($72).

At first, it was the bottle that drew me in (gorgeous botanical artwork is one of the brand’s signatures for its Fine Fragrance line, inspired by the creations of 18th century British mixed-media artist Mary Delaney). A black backdrop with rich purple and red tulips, the design is moody but also lively.

That duality is also present in the scent itself. It has spice from pink pepper and earthiness from oft-polarizing patchouli, but both are sweetened with violet and jasmine, plus the star note: black amber plum. Altogether, it’s irresistible—the kind of soft, sexy scent that has me forgetting about my former scent-self’s love of all things fresh.

Ironically enough, there isn’t an actual tulip note in this fragrance, largely because it’s usually a synthetic note with citrus-y facets, which wouldn’t mesh with the nighttime nature of the spritz. Instead, the scent is an interpretation of the famous flower, and the blooms on the bottle are enough for me.

Like the rest of Nest’s Fine Fragrance collection, this one comes in a rollerball format too—perfect for throwing in your purse, gym bag or carry-on luggage.
