Summer Heatwave

Summer Heatwave

Vibrant, orange lips have always been one of my favorite summer looks. There’s something about the way the bold color complements a sunkissed complexion and the way it works so beautifully with bronzy eyes and warm, peachy cheeks. I usually like to stick to barely-there makeup in the summer, but for this particular look, I wanted to create something that was daring, fun and perfect for a night out.

Orange lips might seem scary, but when paired with soft, subtle bronzy tones and golden shimmer, there’s something so irresistible about them. Want to see exactly how to create this look? Keep on scrolling!

  • Step 1

Even out the complexion with a lightweight foundation. I used the new Make Up For Ever Water Blend Foundation (available in July) and a synthetic, flat-top kabuki. This formula is water-based (yet waterproof) and looks like true, luminous skin—perfect for summer!

  • Step 2

To brighten under the eyes and hide dark circles, apply a luminous concealer. I used my trusty Sephora Bright Future Gel Serum Concealer ($14), which blends in beautifully and hydrates at the same time.

  • Step 3

Set the concealer and t-zone with powder. Here I used Clinique Stay-Matte Universal Blotting Powder ($26.50) with a large, fluffy brush and pushed it into the skin instead of sweeping it over top.

  • Step 4

Add some warmth with bronzer to the high points of the face, focusing on the forehead, bridge of the nose and perimeter of the cheeks. I used the Guerlain Terracotta Summer Limited Edition Bronzing Powder ($55), which gives a completely natural-looking tan to the skin that compliments the bold, orange lips later on.

  • Step 5

If you want to add a bit more definition, give a little contour and highlight to the cheekbones. I used the L’Oreal Infallible Pro Contour Palette ($13), which is super easy to use (watch my video here).

  • Step 6

Time to add some color to the cheeks! Since the look involves orange lips, I wanted to stay in the same orange-y color family. I used the Lancôme Cushion Blush Subtil ($39) in the shade Splash Orange (one of my favorite blushes for summer!) on the apples of the cheeks and softly blended out the edges for a diffused look.

  • Step 7

For the eyes, I wanted to go for a rich, bronzy smokey eye. I used the Urban Decay Alice Through The Looking Glass Eyeshadow Palette ($60) and began by applying the shade Dutchess all over the eyelid.

  • Step 8

Deepen the outer corners of the eyes and crease with a darker brown eyeshadow. I used a bit of Kingdom and Chessboard mixed together from the same eye palette and blended the edges well for a smokey look.

  • Step 9

Line the upper lashline with a matte, black eyeliner. I used the Make Up For Ever Aqua XL Eye Pencil ($21) in M-10 Black, which is completely waterproof doesn’t budge.

  • Step 10

For a little extra oomph, feel free to add some false lashes. Here I used one of my favorites, the KISS Blooming Lash ($5) in Lily. These lashes have a layered effect that makes them look completely natural and fluttery.

  • Step 11

Conceal the false lash band if you need. I like to use a matte liquid eyeliner with an ultra-precise tip to go over the band (I used the Joe Fresh Matte Liquid Eyeliner, $12 for this).

  • Step 12

Finish off the eyes with some waterproof mascara. Here I used the new MAC In Extreme Dimension Waterproof Mascara ($22) and applied a few coats to the upper and lower lashes.

  • Step 13

To frame the eyes, make sure you fill in any sparse areas in the eyebrows and groom them into shape. I used the new Benefit Goof Proof Brow Pencil ($24) on Alex—first filling in with the pencil then using the built-in spoolie on the other side to brush them into place.

  • Step 14

Finally, for the pop of color that makes the entire look! I wanted a rich, bold orange color with a high-gloss finish, so I used the new Make Up For Ever Artist Acrylip ($24) in Orange. This liquid lipstick is limited edition for summer, so get it while it’s available because bright orange lips are sure to be on fire this season!
