Q&A: Does Packaging Make You Purchase?

Does Packaging Make You Purchase?

I have to admit, I’m totally drawn to pretty packaging…whether it’s because its unique and gorgeous, or bright and flashy, or even just very convenient and efficient! However, I can’t say that I would never purchase a product for the packaging alone… sure, it’s helped to sway some opinions when deciding if I should (you know…”it’s so pretty” kinda thing), but if I had no interest in the product itself, I wouldn’t go for it.

What about you?

never.. I do enjoy looking at it and the OOo’s and the Ah’s but that’s about it. I’m very strong minded w/ my purchases. Make sure I really really really want it before I buy haha sometimes I have to ask myself 10 times. No impulse buying for me. :)

I must say that the packaging count for me, but in a different way: a good packaging doesn’t necessarily push me to buy a product, but a bad packaging can make me avoid to buy a product. Do you know what I mean?

I appreciate beautiful/sleek packaging a lot but so long as it’s functional that’s all I care about and the product is what matters most.

  • Maja

    Packaing absolutely make me purchase!

NO, absolutely. I don’t pay extra 20€ for packaging.

  • Lisa

For me, packaging is more about function. If it’s pretty, that’s nice, but is it helpful, or cumbersome? Does the packaging make it easy to put in a makeup bag, or my purse, or is it awkward and bulky? The product itself always comes first when I think about buying anything though!

I’m with you – The product inside has to be good, for me to be swayed by packaging, and let that be the deciding factor.

  • Bo

Not if the product itself is horrible but I definitely tend to be willing to overpay for products with pretty packaging.

  • Trista

Personally I don’t really factor packaging into my decision making process. I like the pretty/cool packaging but not a deal breaker.

If I use the product then I would buy it!!

  • stephanie

i agree. i’m less inclined to buy foundations without pumps, or products with really bulky packaging that i know won’t fit into my makeup drawers. although if a product is good enough, i can deal with it, i.e. the old urban decay primer potions that were just awful to store, or the neutrogena healthy skin foundation.

  • Holly

Definitely yes! But the actual product will still probably need to be something that i’ll use and not just sit around looking pretty and collecting dust.

  • OliviaA

It totally catches my eye, but I do buy for the product. I must admit though, my Volupte Sheer Candy packaging is the best I’ve seen. I love holding it, and the designer details are too chic.

It is one of my weak spots… packaging!

  • oshin

I don’t like cheap packaging and I am hesitant to purchase a product with cheap packaging. That said, I don’t buy a product because it has a nice packaging. A nice packaging is just a bonus.

  • Joanna

I definitely buy products because of their packaging. If it’s not pretty then I just might not buy it unless it has super great reviews.

  • Jem83

I don’t buy product only for packaging, nether if it cost 1 €

  • Cayla

I admit that I am definitley drawn to certain products because of the packaging alone. *cough* Tokidoki, EOS lip balm..*cough* But packaging isn’t the only deciding factor for me. I wouldn’t buy anything that would be bad for my skintone or was super unnecessary just to have the pretty packaging. Now I have purchased some things that I thought would be great products only to have them not work for me at all, so the only good thing I have left about the product to rave about is the super cute packaging. And I am guilty of being turned off by a product if the packaging looks really cheap and easily breakable because I’m kinda a clutz and I dont wanna shell out money for something I’m gonna accidentally break or spill everywhere later on down the beauty road.

  • DalaLuz

It does add to the temptation, absolutely. And it will make it more likely that I want to pick it up and look at it more closely or research it on the internet. But I can’t say I have ever bought something for the packaging alone, even though I am sometimes more tempted. What’s in it is way more important! Plus I lack the space to give pretty packaging their proper display, even my pretty perfume bottles are stuck in a closet (better for their longevity, but what a pity right!). So it definitely has some effect, but in itself prettiness is not enough to make me draw my wallet.

Nope, I don’t think so! I want packaging to be practical and not cheap-looking but that’s it! I have never purchased anything just because the packaging is cute. I have even gone as far as to not purchasing certain products because they’re too cute to be practical (the Paul & Joe cat lipsticks being the best example)!

I love nice packaging for everything I purchase. Which is probably why I like purchasing things from higher up make up companies since the packaging feels more sturdy and glamorous

  • http://chunksofglitter.blogspot.com Zariely

Oh yes, definitely. That explains why I own so many Benefit things!

  • Lauren

it’s a bonus. only if the product actually works though!

  • Anonymous

It definitely sways my purchase decisions. A lot of drugstore products nowadays are just as good as higher end makeup. The only differentiator may being nicer packaging. But makeup is supposed to make you feel pretty and should be fun to play with and that’s just much easier when you have the impression you are putting something luxurious on. Even if the products may be the same quality.

Most definitely! I’m drawn to minimalistic and unique packaging (Like MAC’s and Benefit’s)

  • Virginia Lopez Nadal

It does draw me in, but if the product sucks… well, it sucks!
