Review: Maybelline Color Blur Matte Pencil

We started noticing a trend towards a more relaxed approach to lip color when we saw the orchid-like lips on models at Prabal Gurung’s Spring 2012 runway show. The softer, unfocused finish of the look is definitely something we’ve tried recreating with a medley of products and techniques over the years, but we think Maybelline has finally nailed this look with the new Maybelline Color Blur Matte Pencil ($9) range.

The beauty of this lip pencil range is that each of the ultra vivid colors can be worn in two ways: super precise with a clean and definitive line for a stamp of color that makes a statement or scribbled on and smudged out with the attached angled blurring tip that lends itself to a more casual and effortless look.

Each pencil is retractable and requires no sharpening. The size of the pencil is between a crayon and a lip liner, meaning it won’t take up a ton of space in your purse or makeup bag. The colors are bound to win over any bright lip fan out there, and the formula wears comfortably without drying lips out. Each pigmented shade glides on like butter—it’s hard to believe these have a matte finish because they are anything but chalky.

The rubber smudger resembles a pencil eraser and works well to blur the edge or soften the entire lip. If you want to get creative, you can even blend two shades together, from inner lip to the outer edge for an edgy look. Our favorite shades of the bunch? Fast & Fuchsia, Cherry Cherry Bang Bang and I Like to Mauve It.
