I always get excited when new waterproof mascaras land on my desk to test out, because it’s quite rare that it happens (as many of you know, I only wear waterproof mascara so my lashes stay curled)! This time, its the Revlon PhotoReady 3D Volume Waterproof Mascara ($8.99 USD), and it actually took me a little while to figure out it was waterproof! The packaging looks so similar to the original formula- double check to make sure you’re buying the one you really want.
Being a huge fan of drugstore mascaras (and always willing to lend my lashes to try them out, of course)- I haven’t found many Revlon mascaras that stole my heart. This new formula is part of the PhotoReady line, and boasts a 3D Volume effect- lengthening and volumizing from all angles.
The wand itself is white, but one dip into the tube leaves it coated in mascara from then on out. The brush is a stiff, plastic-bristled brush…and even though I usually stay away from these ones, I was actually quite impressed with this one. It was one of the first times I truly noticed lots of volume and separating together. Usually with volume comes lots of clumps, but this one defined each lash perfectly (if you go on to do a couple more coats, you may experience some clumping though). It also lengthened my lashes nicely too.
In terms of durability- you can’t really get better than waterproof! The super-black formula stays all day and doesn’t flake off. It is a more ‘wet’ formula, so you may notice a bit of dropping of curled lashes over time. Of course, being waterproof, you’ll want to remove it with an oil-based remover (nothing out of the ordinary though).
Is it a ground-breaking formula? Not really. Is it a good formula? Yes. I’ll definitely keep using it and hope that maybe over time it dries out a bit so it isn’t so wet and heavy, but I still enjoy it and it does a great job of making my lashes stand out.
Summary
- Price: $8.99 USD
- Availability: Drugstores
- Overall: A pretty good waterproof mascara overall- it volumizes, lengthens and defines lashes nicely on the first coat (subsequent coats may result in a bit of clumping though, so be careful). It is quite a ‘wet’ formula, so that’s something to keep in mind with those that usually experience ‘drooping’ lashes. It lasts all day with no flaking or smudging, but it is difficult to remove at night (as per usual with waterproof mascaras).
