8 Things You Need To Know About Sunscreen

Coppertone Clearly Sheer SPF 50

The season of sunshine is upon us and while most people are being a little bit more diligent about their sun care, we still have a long way to go when it comes to proper protection from the sun’s harmful rays.

We’ve rounded up 10 facts that you need to know about sunscreen—including how to keep yourself protected through the summer and beyond.

1. It can replace your everyday moisturizer

Not all sunscreens are this thick, uncomfortable formula. Coppertone’s ClearlySheer SPF 50 Body Lotion is a lightweight, hydrating formula that can actually double as a moisturizer that you would put on after you get out of the shower anyway. And then you can rest easy knowing that you’re protected from head to toe. Just make sure you’re reapplying every 2 hours.

2. No, applying your SPF makeup once isn’t enough

Wearing sunscreen is important, but so is applying the right amount every two hours to exposed areas of the body. In fact, if you’re using less than the recommended amount, you’re not even getting the full SPF amount that’s shown on the bottle. So unless you’re slathering on your foundation (and repeating all day), don’t count on it to protect you. And, of course, don’t forget to apply at least 15 minutes before sun exposure—this allows the sun-Screening ingredients for both UVA and UVB rays to sufficiently absorb into your skin and do their thing.

3. Broad spectrum sunscreen acts as an invisible barrier against UVA/UVB Rays

If you think that your sunscreen isn’t really protecting you, think again. When applied properly (see above), sunscreen acts as an invisible barrier between your skin and UVA and UVB rays, for which you should be protected from both.

4. You can wear your makeup on top of it (yes, really)

Most women will tell you that they don’t like the feel of sunscreen on their face or under their makeup and that’s why they choose to go without it, but Coppertone’s ClearlySheer SPF 50 Face Lotion clears all that right up. Like its full-body counterpart, it’s lightweight, boasts a non-comedogenic formula, is paraben-free and won’t make you break out. Since it’s also hydrating and non-greasy, you can also wear it beneath your makeup.

5. A minimum SPF of 15 is recommended at all times

If you’re spending the bulk of the day indoors or aren’t planning on too much sun exposure, SPF 15 is more than enough. In fact, it’s the minimum recommended SPF for daily use. But what does that even mean? Well, SPF—sun protection factor—refers to how many times longer it would take for your skin to burn when using that level of sunscreen as opposed to not wearing anything at all. So, SPF 15 means it would take 15 times longer to burn than without.

6. …But double the SPF doesn’t mean double the protection

If you think that you’re twice as protected with an SPF 30 than SPF 15, that’s not exactly how it works. It is true that the higher the SPF, the more protection you’re getting but, in fact, it’s a smaller margin than most people think. SPF 15 protects against 93% of UVB rays, SPF 30 protects against 97% and SPF 50 protects against 98%—pretty darn close all around.

7. You need to reapply (at least) every two hours

If you’re applying sunscreen in the morning before you leave, we applaud you—truly! But once and then done is not going to protect you all day long—even if you are abiding by the 1 oz rule. Especially with prolonged sun exposure, you should be reapplying your sunscreen at least every two hours (and at least after 80 minutes if you’ve been in and out of water or sweating). With the Coppertone ClearlySheer SPF 50 Body Spray, reapplying is a breeze, so you can get back to enjoying the season sooner.

8. You need to reapply 80 minutes after swimming or sweating (basically don’t dry off in the sun first)

When you get out of the water after your first swim of the summer, you will most likely towel dry it can be tempting to want to lounge and let the sun do the drying, but you need to remember that you’re not protected—especially if you’ve been doing flips off the dock again. After swimming or sweating, it’s time to reapply and get protected before you enjoy the sun. With easy-to-use, lightweight and quick-absorbing formulas like Coppertone’s ClearlySheer lineup, you really have no excuses. Now, who’s ready for the beach?
