10 Sunscreens For Every Excuse

10 Sunscreens For Every Excuse

We’ve all made excuses as to why we aren’t wearing sunscreen—”I was running late” or “I hate the feeling of it” are common ones. Unfortunately, with the long-term effects of sun exposure, we just can’t make excuses anymore. As part of Sun Awareness Week, I want to bust myths, eliminate excuses and find you a sunscreen that you’ll be happy to wear daily.

Admittedly, in previous years I wouldn’t wear sunscreen everyday—especially not on my body. Now, I’ve made it part of my daily routine and feel naked when I forget to put it on (luckily the office is always stocked with every formula imaginable)! I’ve heard every excuse (and dished out many of them), but with the variety of formulas and textures out there, it’s time to put those excuses to rest.

I’ll encourage you to re-read this post from last year that explains exactly what SPF means (and just as importantly—what it doesn’t mean).

Whether you find sunscreens sticky, smelly, thick or greasy, there’s one here you’ll love.

  • 1 of 10 La Roche-Posay Anthelios Ultra-Fluid Lotion SPF 50
  • La Roche-Posay Anthelios Ultra-Fluid Lotion SPF 50
  • “It makes me feel sticky and gross.”

It’s true, sunscreen used to be thick, greasy and leave skin feeling sticky—but those days are gone. When it comes to texture, you’ll be amazing how lightweight and barely-there some formulas are. The La Roche-Posay Anthelios Ultra-Fluid Lotion SPF 50 feels like a lightweight milk that absorbs quickly into the skin. It’s similar to those ultra-light formulas designed for faces, but in a much larger bottle for your whole body.

  • Coppertone Clearly Sheer Faces SPF 30
  • “My makeup doesn’t sit well on top of it.”

If you find your makeup pilling, sliding off or just not looking right on top of sunscreen, try this new formula. The Coppertone Clearly Sheer Faces SPF 30 feels super lightweight, won’t clog pores and feels completely clean on the skin. It works beautifully under makeup (it almost acts like a primer) and won’t break you out. I’ve been using this one daily for weeks and I’ve never looked back. It also comes in a lightweight spray which is great for touch-ups later in the day.

  • 3 of 10 Garnier Ombrelle Sport Endurance SPF 50+
  • Garnier Ombrelle Sport Endurance SPF 50+
  • “I’ll just sweat it off.”

Whether you’re chilling by the pool, going for a bike ride or spending the day at the tennis courts, you’re bound to get sweaty. Many traditional “sport” sunscreens are really heavy and greasy, but the new Garnier Ombrelle Sport Endurance SPF 50+ (available in Canada) changes that. The formula is the brand’s first an oil-free, water-based sunscreen that still provides 80 minutes of water and sweat resistance. It applies completely clear and evenly—even on wet skin! You really have to feel this formula to believe it.

  • 4 of 10 Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Face & Body Stick SPF 50+
  • Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Face & Body Stick SPF 50+
  • “It’s too big for my carry-on luggage.”

If you’re jetsetting away for a couple days, it can be difficult to bring enough sunscreen in a carry-on. First of all, you can try claiming it at airport security as a drug (sunscreens have a DIN number), which may allow you to get by on the volume restriction (I’ve tried this with both successful and failed attempts—so do so at your own risk). Another great option? This new Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Face & Body Stick SPF 70 is a solid, so you can pack a few in your carry-on without overflowing your toiletry bag. It feels super lightweight and is also great for keeping in your purse for impromptu patio outings in the summer.

  • 5 of 10 Avène Mineral Lotion Sunscreen SPF 50+
  • Avène Mineral Lotion Sunscreen SPF 50+
  • “It irritates my sensitive skin.”

For those with very sensitive skin (or those who just want to use mineral formulas instead of chemical ones), Avène Mineral Lotion Sunscreen SPF 50+ has always been a front-runner for me. It’s fragrance-free and has a lovely, creamy texture. It also is slightly tinted, which helps to counteract the typical white cast many mineral sunscreens leave on the skin.

  • 6 of 10 Aveeno Protect + Hydrate SPF 30
  • Aveeno Protect + Hydrate SPF 30
  • “I don’t like the smell of it.”

I’ve always been a fan of Aveeno Protect + Hydrate SPF 30 because it doesn’t even feel like sunscreen to me. Out of all the sunscreens I’ve tried (and trust me, as a beauty editor I’ve tried many), this one has the least ‘sunscreen smell’ out of them all. Plus, it hydrates and soothes the skin for 24-hours and can be used on face and body.

  • 7 of 10 SkinCeuticals Physical Matte UV Defense Sunscreen SPF 50
  • SkinCeuticals Physical Matte UV Defense Sunscreen SPF 50
  • “It makes my face look shiny and oily.”

If you have oily skin, this sunscreen is for you. The SkinCeuticals Physical Matte UV Defense Sunscreen SPF 50 is a great daily option that has an oil-absorbing base to keep your skin looking matte. Even if you don’t have oily skin, hot, humid temperatures can bring out the shine and this formula is great for keeping oil slicks at bay. It dries down to a powder finish, making it a fabulous base for makeup too.

  • 8 of 10 Sun Bum Sunscreen Spray SPF 15
  • Sun Bum Sunscreen Spray SPF 15
  • “I have dark skin so I don’t need it.”

Dark skin might not burn as easily—but it definitely needs to be protected from UV damage which can absolutely lead to skin cancer. Darker skintones can usually opt for a lighter sunscreen, like the Sun Bum Sunscreen Spray SPF 15, which feels completely weightless and is easy to apply.

  • 9 of 10 Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration Weightless
  • Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration Weightless
  • “I don’t have time to apply it daily.”

First of all, this is the worst excuse. When it comes to your health, you have to make time. The new Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration Weightless Sunscreen SPF 30 is so hydrating, you can swap your regular daily moisturizer for this formula. It leaves skin looking radiant, hydrated and beautiful. Keep it right next to the shower and slather it on as soon as you get out!

  • 10 of 10 Vita Liberata Self-Tan Dry Oil SPF 50
  • Vita Liberata Self-Tan Dry Oil SPF 50
  • “I want to be tanned.”

This is also a terrible excuse. You most definitely will tan if you’re wearing sunscreen (if you do tan—most very fair skintones will only burn). If you really want to achieve a ultra deep, dark tan, you’re going to love the new Vita Liberata Self-Tan Dry Oil SPF 50. This gradual tanner instantly delivers a luminous bronze tint to the skin, protects against sun damage with broad-spectrum SPF 50, nourishes the skin with luxurious dry oils and builds a natural-looking tan over time. *mic drop*
