Review: Too Faced Born This Way Foundation

Coconut water has taken the limelight from water and sports drinks as the way to hydrate your body, so it comes as little surprise that beauty brands are incorporating it more and more into the formulations of their new launches. Too Faced Born This Way Foundation ($39) is one of the more compelling launches we’ve seen to incorporate coconut water into the mix, so we gave it a try to see if it did help our skin stay hydrated while providing medium to full coverage that’s virtually undetectable.

We found the oil-free texture to be quite pleasant to use since it’s practically a gel, meaning it glides on with ease (and felt super refreshing). We also found that fingers work best for applying this foundation, as brushes made for a slightly streakier application than we’d like. The finish was natural-looking as the product claims without any discernible shimmer in the formula – just the way we prefer a foundation to be (or rather, how we want our skin to look).

While the dozen shades available are useful in finding a proper match with your skin tone, we found the shade we thought we would match up with was still a hair too light after it was applied, so we actually wound up using a shade deeper than we figured we would. If you’re contemplating going between two shades—choose the darker one.  Since the product launched, Too Faced announced that six more shades will be added this fall—two lighter than Porcelain and 8 shades deeper than Caramel. AMAZING.

Overall, we appreciated the way this foundation applied to skin, as well as the hydration it provided, thanks to the trio of alpine rose, coconut water and hyaluronic acid. In our experience, it didn’t cling to dry patches and the oil-free nature of the formula would lend well to just about any skin type. Too Faced claims it to be a medium-to-full coverage formula, which we agree on (probably more just “medium”, we have pretty high standards for what is “full coverage”). It’s a fabulous everyday foundation, and if you’re looking to extend the wear a little longer (and boost hydration even more), check out the brand’s HangoverRx Primer which works well with the formula.

The foundation is available now at Sephora and online at, so give it a try if your skin is in need of a bit of extra moisture and natural-looking coverage.
