Too Faced has quite a few of these neat palettes, that not only combine color-coordinating shades, but also contain proportional amounts of the shades depending on their typical use. This Too Faced Matte Eye Shadow Collection ($36 USD / $45 CAD) is an all-matte eyeshadow palette containing 9 different shades in both neutrals and colors.
The palette is divided into three different “looks” (divided horizontally), with one base color (the largest one), one lid color and one crease color for each. The palette (and others like this one) also contain look cards tucked away into the lid that suggest different looks using the eyeshadows. The packaging is cute, with a magnetic-closure lid… but I do wish there was a mirror in the lid. That would just make the packaging perfect!
Good matte eyeshadows aren’t very common… and I’m quite picky when it comes to my mattes- I want them to be smooth, creamy and pigmented (and not leave my eyelids looking like crepe paper).
I’m happy so say that this palette is very consistent in quality- all of the eyeshadows are more or less the same in terms of pigmentation (the light base shades might be a tad less pigmented… but still good enough in my books). Having said that, they aren’t the best matte eyeshadows in the world… but they definitely do the job. I definitely recommend using some sort of primer and base (like a NYX jumbo pencil or MAC Paint Pot) to give these a little kick and really make the colors stand out.
The three “sets” of eyeshadows in this palette include:
- Tufted Suede: a yellow beige
- Chinchilla: a mid-tone, warm brown
- Coffee Bean: a dark, rich brown
- Velveteen Bunny: white
- Pebbles: smokey grey
- London Fog: deep navy
- Fresh Linen: a pale, soft pink
- Vintage Violet: mid-tone, dirty rose
- Midnight: deep grey
The Day look is a soft, neutral one. I’m not too fond of the Tufted Suede shade, I just don’t think it suits my skin tone… but the overall look is pretty nice. The Classic look is definitely my favorite… a soft, easy smokey eye for dinner party or night out. The Fashion look is a little more difficult to pull off because of the pink and rose tones, but the grey helps to pull it together (I would still recommend pairing this look with black eyeliner though).
The instructional cards are great for ideas, but you can use the shadows however you want! This palette would make a great addition to any collection in need of a few more matte shades, or for someone who is just starting out.
- Price: $36 USD / $45 CAD (Not a fan of the huge price difference… boo!)
- Availability: Sephora
- Overall: A great matte eyeshadow palette- consistent quality, easy to blend and I like the color combinations overall. Not the best eyeshadows I’ve tried, but good enough for a keeper in my books. Mix and match the colors to create your own looks, or use the instructional cards provided!
