Yves Saint Laurent is all about fun color and textures this summer with the new Yves Saint Laurent La Laque Couture Tie & Dye Top Coats ($25 USD / $27 CAD), including four different tri-phase polishes that mix shine, color and shimmer to transform your regular polish shade into an iridescent, candy-coated color. These top coats are available on counters May 2013 (but you can already check it out online).
This collection includes four shades, each with three different phases that make them absolutely beautiful to look at (they remind me of popsicles)! Each polish as a clear top layer, a sheer color middle layer and an iridescent bottom layer. When the bottle is shaken, the three phases mix together to create a sheer, shimmery top coat the adds sparkle and shine to any polish. It’s a very subtle look, but you can see in the swatch photos that it creates a very noticeable, beautiful effect. When left alone, the bottles will re-settle to their tri-phase state after several hours.
The shades include…
- Nº 1 Cool Coat: Soft, baby pink
- Nº 2 Pop Coat: Hot pink
- Nº 3 Hip Coat: Purple grape
- Nº 4 Ice Coat: Striking blue
Yves Saint Laurent designed these top coats to be paired with certain colors (I didn’t have all the shades in the original La Laque Couture formula, so I did my best to substitute similar shades), however they can definitely be used over any polish you desire. The final look has a bit of a lightening effect, with a very fine micro-shimmer that really looks like it’s simply a part of the original polish texture, and of course a high shine gloss finish.
They have a very thin consistency, almost like water! Shake up the bottles well to distribute the textures evenly, and then apply 1-2 layers to your finished, dry nail polish (you can do it on naked nails too, but its so subtle it’s really not that noticeable). The more layers you add, the more shimmery and light the polish becomes. They are quite a cool concept, and although they aren’t entirely necessary, they are pretty darn cool to look at and play with.
Since the ‘accent nail’ is so popular right now (doing a different color or texture on the ring finger of each hand as an ‘accent’), these top coats would make that super easy! Whether you leave the ring finger without any top coat, or just use the top coat to add some shimmer to the accent nail, the result is beautiful, simple and will match beautifully because the original color of the polish really pulls through.
